For some time now, every time I walk the streets I have been more and more surprised by the amount of graffiti and murals I find everywhere. In Old Havana is where it is most common to see this type of street art on walls, doors and facades of houses and buildings.

Desde hace un tiempo cada vez que recorro las calles me sorprendo cada vez mas por la cantidad de grafitis y murales que encuentro por todas partes. En La Habana Vieja es donde es más común ver este tipo de arte callejero en muros, paredes, puertas y fachadas de casas y edificios.

Street art in Cuba has gone from being a censored and even forbidden expression to becoming an accepted and admired manifestation, especially by passers-by and tourists visiting the city, who love to photograph these murals as a colourful and special souvenir of their visit to the island.

I love discovering these murals, not only because of the artwork itself, but also because of the environment in which they are located, as they create a unique contrast. Walls and walls worn down by the passage of time are decorated with these modern and colourful paintings that adorn spaces that would otherwise look more run down and neglected.

This particular mural is on O'Reilly Street in Old Havana. The first thing that made me turn to photograph it was its colours, the combination of pink and purple with black makes it stand out quite a bit. It looks recent and is painted on a brick wall and on the door of a house. The woman's face at the centre of the painting is striking and her all-white eyes evoke a sense of mystery, something supernatural and unreal.

El arte callejero en Cuba ha pasado de ser una expresión censurada e incluso prohibida a convertirse en una manifestación aceptada y admirada, especialmente por los transeúntes y los turistas que visitan la ciudad, a quienes les encanta fotografiar estos murales como un recuerdo colorido y especial de su visita a la isla.

A mí me encanta descubrir estos murales, no solo por la obra en sí, sino por el entorno en el que se encuentran ya que crean un contraste único. Las paredes y muros desgastados por el paso del tiempo se decoran con estas pinturas modernas y coloridas que adornan espacios que de otro modo lucirían más deteriorados y descuidados.

Este mural en particular está en la calle O'Reilly, en La Habana Vieja. Lo primero que me hizo girar para fotografiarlo fueron sus colores, la combinación de rosa y púrpura con negro hace que resalte bastante. Parece reciente y está realizado en una pared de ladrillos y sobre la puerta de una vivienda. El rostro de mujer que es el centro de la pintura, es impactante y sus ojos totalmente blancos evocan una sensación de misterio, algo sobrenatural e irreal.

I have seen several graffiti in different places in Havana with similar women's faces, with that mystical and enigmatic touch.

I hope this art continues to grow and that Cuban artists can continue to use this form of expression to share their creativity, allowing us all to appreciate and enjoy it.

He visto varios grafitis en distintos lugares de La Habana con rostros de mujeres similares, con ese toque místico y enigmático.

Ojalá este arte siga creciendo y que los artistas cubanos puedan seguir usando esta forma de expresión para compartir su creatividad, permitiendo que todos podamos apreciarla y disfrutarla.
