CCC's Street Art Contest #186 - "Home", MAR, Quinta do Mocho, Lisboa, Portugal

Good afternoon, friends!

Welcome to another post in the Street Art community!

A piece by Gonçalo MAR, whose work I've already shared here, and in collaboration with him, leaves us with a theme that is still very topical today... Housing. This façade of a three-storey building in one of the most deprived neighborhoods on the outskirts of Lisbon, near Santarém - called Quinta do Mocho - is a good illustration of one of the artist's concerns. This neighborhood is marked by thousands of lives that live there in less than dignified conditions, but always with the courage to face up to the difficulties and turn their fragility into a point of encouragement. I can tell you that on this day, I was walking around the Expo area, the eastern part of Lisbon, and as I had most of the afternoon free, I ended up putting this destination into the GPS on my cell phone and driving there. I arrived in a very impoverished neighborhood, with the majority of the population coming from former Portuguese colonies, but at no time did I feel that I was at risk because of the color of my skin, or because I was walking through a neighborhood that wasn't mine.

As the vicissitudes of urban life push people more and more towards peripheral situations and locations, to the detriment of the usual law of supply and demand, it is likely to get worse and worse. At a time when my country's government is about to change (we'll be voting for the Assembly of the Republic next Sunday, the 10th), we need to look at the problems that exist in this particular area, and that in the last eight years nothing, or practically little, has been done to alleviate housing difficulties. And I'm not just talking about the neediest families. Many people find themselves in complicated situations with rents that clearly exceed the maximum effort rate that the family can bear, leading to situations that can lead to social disruption.

This issue is one of my concerns as a Portuguese citizen, as well as many others.

I hope that the Portuguese population will vote to express their will for the constitution of Portugal's next government.

Indeed! He is so popular that he usually is represented in the biggest art items sprayed on buildings!

Beautiful mural with this abstraction work. I didn't know Portugal's elections were coming up, all we hear about in Canada is the U.S. primaries. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Have a great day
