I Wish for a Social Sanction for Troublemakers

Hi, Learners... In this massive social media era, there are so many social phenomena that we must inevitably, like it or not, agree or disagree with.

One of them is the habit of a public figure who commits a scandal and then only posts a clarification video to apologise to the public on social media!!!

And worse, it's accepted!

How disgusted I am with the behaviour of such public figures. However, let's delve deeper into this ridiculous phenomenon.

A “FRIENDLY” CULTURE

Why do I put “friendly” in quotes? Well, of course because being friendly can be a double-edged sword. The connotation of being hospitable may be that ha is good. However, what about being hospitable to a morally bankrupt scandal, for example? Isn't that very... very... like a culture that can corrupt from within?

It happens a lot in my country. A famous and influential person makes a scandals (a moral lapse, or a crime) and then gets cleared just because they uploaded an apology video. There is nothing wrong with an apology, but, to cover up a scandal with high risk? Big no! I strongly, strongly disagree with this.

Oh, what's worse, the public still gives them a platform as guests and resource persons from podcast to podcast...like...what? What is wrong with this society? How to give a deterrent effect to a guilty person? Why is it that they are given a stage so that they can act again, then play the victim as if they only did it “accidentally”.

CANCEL CULTURE AS SOCIAL SANCTION

Do you think cancel culture is evil? In my opinion, not entirely. Since we were in school, during social studies lessons, we were taught that there is such a thing as social sanctions for someone who commits social deviations according to the prevailing faith. This includes the scandal.

Social sanctions with cancel culture in my opinion are still humane, after all, people who have violated something must really understand the situation it causes, understand what negative impacts of the jokes they do. There is simply no need to give them a platform on national television, and this “friendly” society should start to take action against cancel culture.

I would like to make it clear, though, that the cancel culture we are referring to is not the type of cancel that exists in the showbiz industry in South Korea, and I am honestly both fascinated and amazed by the cancel culture that exists there. However, I see a very positive side, namely, the showbiz industry is not littered with irresponsible people.

Anyway, thank you for this great prompt, so I can express my opinion about my friend. It's really a concern of mine because I'm getting more and more fed up with behaviour clarification videos.

See you in my next post.
