I guess that the environment is perfect for the Downy woodpeckers in my neck of the woods. They are always at the feeders, enjoying the suet.
The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest of the woodpeckers that reside in North America. Adults only weigh between 3/4 of an ounce and an ounce.
I don't think I've ever heard them sing or even make a chirp, but their constant pecking is a very familiar sound. Sometimes they will peck on an aluminum ladder that is near the house and that sound will echo through the woods.
The Downy Woodpecker does not have to go through the trouble of building a nest but rather nests in the hollows of a tree.
It's hard to believe that this tiny bird can lay up to eight eggs at a time. With the incubation time only being 12 days, it's no wonder there are so many around.
Downy woodpeckers are monogamous.
She is gorgeous simply getting on with life, raising big brood of young for a small lass.

For a bird that lacks any color the black and white pattern of the bird is striking. When the bird flies the markings take on a whole different look, I just haven't been able to capture the bird in flight.
The entry photo is outstanding, wonderful close-up.🙂
Woodpeckers are among my favourite birds and the first to photograph. It is interesting to know more about the ones that live at your end.
Despite how many times I see this bird, which is all of the time, I still get excited.
