Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 147 ~ going solo

Most often, when I see a Turkey Vulture I don't see just one but rather several of these large birds while they circle the skies looking for carrion.

Unlike most birds, the Turkey Vulture has a keen sense of smell. The turkey vulture can pick up the scent of a dead animal from a mile away. These birds can grow to a height of 2 1/2 feet and have a wingspan of six feet. They have a rather long life span, as many of them will live up to 24 years.

The Black-capped chickadee is a very common bird in our area

and is one of the few birds that stick around through the winter.

When these birds come in for a meal they are usually not alone and capturing just a single Black-capped chickadee in a frame takes lots of patience. Sometimes we get lucky and can shoot a picture of a bird that is in flight. This guy was making a landing and despite the movement, I was thrilled with the clarity of this picture.

With the bird feeders we have hung about 25 yards from the front porch of our house, we will often litter the porch with seed to bring them in closer. While all of the other birds are very skittish and will fly off when we are sitting on the porch, the Black-capped chickadee shows no fear while we sit just a few feet from where they are feeding.

Checking each other out, up-close and personal.

Good luck to all of the contestants for this week's contest in the #fethered #friends community.

I'm not sure how these wonderful ladies, @nelinoeva, @melinda010100, and @barbara-orenya can stay on top of it all.

Thank you very much for all of your efforts and your support.

Happy Holidays everyone.

The vulture is so huge! Chickadee is so cute! Her close relative lives with us - the willow tit.

So strange, as we have a weird goose here that looks very much like that turkey vulture, but not so as Marian also had a look, and the face is different. !LOLZ
Some nice shots in here and good luck in the contest.

One of the things this bird does is consume lots of dead animals on the roadways. I would think that this might help diseases from spreading if the animal were to lay there and rot.

Oh yes, we also have vultures here, and I posted some a long time ago. Sadly, they have become endangered due to poisoning, and many die when they strike the high power cables, on the steel towers. I was a national manager at a company, and we used to refurbish the towers across the country. Many days we had to remove dead vultures and even some eagles from the tops of the towers.

Blessings and !BEER

Many times man doesn't think of the effects of what they are doing until it's too late.

@splatts is a lineman and he runs across the same thing quite often with birds nesting in the electrical towers, sometimes even blowing out the transformer.

Thanks for the beer, my friend.

So true and our endangered list is growing by the day.

Yep! Linesmen know all about it and it is a sad affair.

Now I don't want to get you intoxicated, so here's a !PIZZA to absorb the alcohol !LOLZ
