Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 136

The Downy Woodpeckers are a delight to observe
when they are feeding.
Most often we see them eating suet from the feeder or pecking away at trees looking for insects. But, on this day I observed this male Downy eating the pedals from a hanging impatiens basket.

At first, I thought that it was mimicking the feeding habits of a hummingbird, eating the nectar from the red flowers of the impatiens.

I was mistaken. This guy was actually eating the colorful flowers.

After tearing away a small piece of the pedal he would proceed to munch away until the pedal had been totally consumed.

IMG_3083.JPG

I observed this for several minutes, intrigued by his choice of food. This was the first time I had seen this behavior.

I was sure he was consuming the pedal that was in its beak
because it would disappear from sight
without a morsel ever hitting the ground.

After the Downy downed each piece he had torn from the flower of the impatiens he would head right back for another snack.

No matter how often I see this wonderful winged creature I'm captivated by its acrobatic display, many times hanging upside down while contemplating its next move.

Petals attract some birds, our sparrows enjoy the trumpet tree flower petals, I too marveled at the fact this little seed eater enjoyed petals.

Never witnessed this behaviour with woodpeckers, although we don't see many around we do have them in town, different variety to yours.

Always learning something new in nature!

When I looked into what the Downy woodpecker ate it said nothing about pedals. Bugs, seeds, and berries were the only items mentioned besides suet.
I kicked up some pictures of the trumpet tree flower petals, and they look as appetizing as the impatiens. But, who am I to judge, I'm not a bird.

Perhaps the bird was bored with normal, took a swing at life with tasting something different, we all need a change every so often!

Rose petal wine tastes fine, birds don't have time to wait, original petals have to do.

Beautiful birds. I would never expect that the woodpecker will munch on the petals.

I was a little surprised by that also, but he sure seemed to be enjoying his snack.

I have never seen woodpeckers eating flowers, this is something new I learned today. The photos are brilliant and the woody is truely an acrobat, so delightful to watch. 🙂

Thanks, it surprised the heck out of me. I kept waiting for the pedals to drop to the ground, but they never did.

I have only seen pictures of birds with this kind of beautiful colour
I have never seen them in real life
I hope I see them someday

The markings of the Downy are surely beautiful. When the bird flies the colors are even more spectacular.

Yep! That is something new and although we don't have them here, I have never seen a bird eating flower petals. The small birds over here keep our flowers clean, as they launder the flowers of insects and bugs, but they don't eat the leaves. Maybe your bird here is a vegan !LOLZ

Strange indeed. It's funny that you mention vegan, when I was watching this guy go to town I thought the same thing.
