On Fire

The temperature in our house has now dropped even further, as the "repair" job done yesterday evening, didn't repair anything. Smallsteps had to sleep at her grandparent's place, because it is just too cold here for a small child. This morning, it was 12°C (53°F) inside, and that is with the fireplace burning. In other parts of the house, it is colder. So, we called again for the millionth time and asked for a specific servicer to come out, who was able to sort things before Christmas, when we were having issues.

He found the problem.

He can't fix the problem.

The problem is that three years ago, they didn't install what we bought. Yes... that is right. It is a completely different machine, and one that is not suitable for this size of house, when the weather gets this cold. Not only that, the outdoor unit is also too small for this size of house. However, it is currently only heating two-thirds of the place, and we specifically checked that it would be large enough to cover the entire house, once we heat the basement.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

If they had installed the correct one, we supposedly wouldn't be having this issue at all, so he recommended (he is a service person) to make a reclamation on the machine. However, it takes weeks to get a new machine from Germany. In the meantime, they are meant to have some part that will fix it enough for now, but they said that might take a week to get the part and have someone install it.

So, the nice service guy went and rented some heating blowers as an interim solution to heat the house, which was nice. The problem is, one went on, the second went on, and then it blew the circuit breaker, as it was drawing too much electricity.

My wife was in a meeting, I was 10 minutes away from having one.

My wife called the company again, and after some discussion about hotels and broken pipes, they miraculously had a cancellation and will bring people in from a few hundred kilometers away, to install it tomorrow.

However, this isn't the end of it, because we still have the wrong machine and it still isn't going to do what it must, which is heat 300m², not the 200m² it is currently heating. And, it has to work in Finnish conditions, where at least once a year, there is a period or two of very cold weather.

I am annoyed.

I don't get how we are having this kind of "luck" with these things. I have mentioned this to my wife before, but even she today has been bringing it up, that we seem to get the short straw so many times, across so many things. It doesn't matter if we do "the right things" and our due diligence, it doesn't matter if we take precautions, we seem to consistently get burned.

Ironically, a little more heat would help us now.

There is no lesson here to learn, other than perhaps that regardless of what befalls us, we still have things to, so the very cold Finnish saying fits;

Tee, tai itke ja tee.

Do, or cry and do.

We haven't cried yet, mainly because if we do, the tears will freeze onto our eyelashes and they will fall off. So, we have just had to do. I might see if Smallsteps and my wife can go to the neighbors for the evening though, because it is not very pleasant to be inside here at the moment. However, someone has to make sure that the fire keeps burning, so if I sit close enough to it, I can cry alone without the tears freezing.

I don't remember the last time I have cried.

Perhaps it would be cathartic, but I prefer to write instead.

On the bright side, I will probably meet up with a couple colleagues from work for a burger, which means I can be in the warmth of the car and a bar for a few hours at least, and meet one of my goals for 2024 of a face-to-face meeting every week. Not only that, I also talked to a friend on the phone for a bit too, so that is one down and two to go for the week.

On fire.

I hate being cold! I hope they get it all sorted for you very soon.

I normally prefer to be colder than hotter, but there are limits!!

Is something like this available in Finland? Not enough to heat a house all on its own, but enough to help out and not be a strain on your electricity.

Yes - My wife just sent me a link to one - unfortunately, the shops are closed already. But if no love tomorrow, I will pick one up. Should have something for emergencies anyway.

It's good to see that you are still finding humour under such freezing and shitty conditions. That's surely one good way to keep your spirits up.

It's amazing how things can miraculously develop when you put more pressure on service people. My brother in law's car alarm kept on going off intermittently back in summer and Kia couldn't find out the problem for months. He ended up not locking his car overnight when he was at home. Then they told Kia they had to go away for a month, and if they don't fix the problem, they'll have to get him a car rental. Guess what? The problem got solved within a few days!!

Hopefully when the engineers turn up tomorrow they can fix things immediately to heat up the house properly. Till then....

There is no situation that bad, that it can't be laughed at.

When they would be otherwise forced to pay extra costs, they generally find a way. One of the benefits of business models looking to maximize revenue.

I am definitely bundled up! Not quite to that level yet though :)

It sucks to have domestic problems at any time, but at this time of year it's disappointing. I like that despite the "climatic" situation, you imbue a touch of humor to the drama you're living through. Here they say: if lemons fall from the sky, learn to make lemonade. I hope you can resolve and that your year will be better. Greetings

Hopefully we will only be shivering for another 24 hours at max - but I also don't hold much faith in hope :)

I wonder if they will compensate for the damage they caused to your family@

I open the boiler in the evenings for two weeks because outside is warmer than your home as you said :) However, they expect rain- snow next week on Tuesday.

Man, that sucks. I am sorry you are dealing with that. My wife feels the same way about other things if it makes you feel better, so I don't think you are alone in feeling you have bad luck. We hit that deer right after we got her new car plus some other stuff and she was ready to throw her hands up. Stuff just happens. It doesn't feel like it when it is happening, but I've been told the world doesn't revolve around me.

Yeah, I feel like we do our due diligence, and still get screwed over. Other people we know don't seem to get these kinds of issues, even though they have much the same stuff.

but I've been told the world doesn't revolve around me.

My wife tells me the same.

They probably have their own issues, they just aren't as vocal about it. It's pretty easy for people to share their successes, but it takes a lot of character to share your mistakes as well.

It's freezing here too, cars are often the warmest places. Get some thermal socks, they are for old people like us.

I am wearing mother-in-law-made woolen socks. And thermal underwear :D

The socks in question were a Xmas gift, and probably the best one I got. Try them.

That is so sad, I hope they help you fix the issue as soon as possible.

I don't know how horrible cold weather is since I'm constantly enduring the heat in this part of the world

I am from the tropics, but I tend to prefer to be a little cooler, than a little warmer. Though, this is ridiculous for inside the house.

I’m very sure that I’ve never experienced the kind of cold you people usually experience over there
I just hope I’m able to travel to Finland or maybe a cold country to have that experience

There is cold and then there is very cold. Currently, this is very cold - it is not so pleasant. When it is about -10, it is nice.

Wow, that is insane. I can't imagine how frustrated you guys are. Once you think more about it, your electricity bill might be higher because of it as well, since the machine most probably had to work at max capacity on regular days to heat your house, instead of the normal operation a bigger one would have been. I think I've read that your basement is heated first. Would it help/be possible to open the basement door to let the heat spread towards your house?
