Mexican Murals - Alice in Chapultepec Land [CCC's Street Art Contest #182]

Hello mural fans! Today I have a long mural to show you, one with many parts and pieces, too long to put into one single picture. However, it is all related, as all of these images are themed Alice in Wonderland. I found it on the wall of the second section of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City, right where it borders on the Dolores Cemetery by the Ave Bosques just before it meets Ave Constituyentes.

Alice the Sprayer

On the left end of this mural we can see Alice, looking very much like the Disney cartoon version, holding a spray can next to some elaborate graffiti. To me this tag would look hardly impressive, if not for the fact that it was Alice herself who painted it, covering the ubiquitous watch and cards that are features of her Wonderland story. Much more interesting, I think, is the portray of the Mad Hatter, looking completely like his character made famous by Johnny Depp in the 2010 live action film. This part was created by muralist Oscar Fozil.

Mushrooms and Caterpillar

Moving on to the trippy aspect of Alice's story, or let's say the one most commonly referring to the blatantly hallucinogenic aspect of what seems like one giant trip of Lewis Carroll: the smoking caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. Once again we're back at the Disney cartoon, with one exception: He is not smoking a sheesha (or hooka?) but what looks like a cigarette. Never mind, at least the mushrooms look like they should have a nice effect.

Enter Robo-Rabbit

Right next to the caterpillar is a character that doesn't seem to follow either interpretation of Alice, at least from what I know. It's the white rabbit, all right, complete with his pocket watch, but he looks more like a giant robot! It's funny to imagine a robot so worried about being late! The artist behind this piece of the mural (and I assume the caterpillar as well) is Nia Fase.

Duchess, Queen of Hearts, and HBD!!!

The other two prominent characters from the story are (what I guess must be) the Duchess, wearing a white and blue dress, and the Queen of Hearts, of course in red. Both are much better looking than the story credits them, but what I got immediately excited about was the HBD sign in the Queen's crown, and the Duchess' scepter. Could it be that these talented muralists could be Hiveans as well?

I still have no definite answer to this. A careful look at the Duchess shows the initials of NIA once again, as well as a certain NATH, whom I could not identify for certain. As for the Queen, she was painted by Moonkeysp, a London based Mexican muralist. Still, I can't find an explication for the HBD...

It's got it all! I'm still puzzled about the HBD, but in case all else fails, this post will be the connecting factor.

A wonder being a mural as a relation to Alice in Wonderland. I loved the fact that Alicia is painting the image. The Queen and the embedded HBD giving a message is great. Anyway, I loved how you detailed each of the images on this beautiful wall, exalting the art. Success and best of luck in the contest @stortebeker

Thanks for the nice comment, and the gifts! Yes,the individual details painted by a a number of different artists make this mural so special. Lots of times I only notice one part that sticks out, and at a closer look I discover its complexity. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Right, isn't it? That HBD alone makes it worthy of a Hive post!
