Battle Mage Secrets: Playing Without Magic
Introduction
I'm here to share my Battle Mage Secrets blog post for the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge. The theme featured this week is Lost Magic. In this ruleset, magic units are banned. I will sharing my strategy for this ruleset below.
My Strategy & Tips For Lost Magic
Ideally for Lost Magic ruleset, I look into strong melee and ranged units. Some strong units in this battle would be a unit with the shield ability which basically halves any damage in this battle since there is no magic. This is probably my go to strategy. To go beyond this, there can also be other things looked at like Headwinds to nerf range damage, thorns to reflect melee damage, demoralize to weaken melee units and return fire to reflect ranged damage.
As for the summoners, I look into the ones that buff or debuff a unit in regards to melee or ranged damage, summoners that give armor and summoners that give or reduce speed. Some summoners that can be looked into are like Quix, Kelya and Jacek.
The Battle
I played this battle on my account, shawnnft. The battle link can be found here. This battle is from a brawl I played. The battle is in the Wild Diamond League fray. The ruleset for this battle was Silenced Summoners, Lost Magic and Back to Basics. It was a 22 mana cap with only the water, earth and dragon element available.
Discussing My Lineup
Summoner, Quix - I chose Quix because in the rulesets listed it would've gave more options for cards to play which I didn't end up using.
First Position, Cruel Sethrepod - I chose Cruel Sethrepod to be the frontline. It has one of the best health and armor for 3 mana. I knew there was no magic which is one of it's biggest weakness.
Second Position, Hardy Stonefish - I chose Hardy Stonefish to be a secondary tank and cannon fodder. It was just a low mana card that could probably tank another 2-3 hits.
Third Position, Wave Brood - The main purpose of Wave Brood was to be a backup tank after the first two units get knocked out. Wave Brood has excellent health stats to tank more hits.
Fourth Position, Angelic Mandarin - The purpose of this card was to just do DPS. It had the highest health compared to the fifth and last unit so it was placed here.
Fifth Position, Xenith Archer - The purpose of this card was to do DPS as well.
Last Position, Igor Darkspear - Igor Darkspear was my last unit. It had more damage than Xenith Archer so I placed this last. I usually like to have my higher damage unit in the back especially in this type of ruleset since it involves back to basics as well.
Analysis of The Battle
I seemed to have predicted the opponent's play of mostly using ranged units. I was able to tank and out DPS my opponent. I think my opponent made a mistake of spending so much mana on the Djinn CHawala and the Gargoya Devil. They weren't so mana efficient provided the ruleset of back to basics which didn't add on any abilities. I was able to play more units with more health and also have a steady amount of damage. This most likely led me to victory.
Do I Like Lost Magic ruleset
I think this ruleset is interesting. There's a lot of magic spammers in ranked with Alric and Obsidian so I think it's interesting to have a ruleset where magic can't be played. Based on this, I kind of like this ruleset as it helps create more diversity in Splinterlands gameplay.
