Beer Tasting: Turbo Prop and Califia

avatar

Hello everyone! 🍻

How are you these days? There's a lot going on here...
But I'm lucky, everything is fine here (for now), so I have time for #beersaturday, 318 in a row.

Speaking of what is happening here - I came back home from holiday on Wednesday to check that everything was OK at home, because the day before there was a tornado in my town, which destroyed 18 houses and several roofs.
Everything is fine at my place, even the field is OK, the tornado missed it by 100 meters.

Well, on Thursday it started raining heavily and northern Slovenia was hit by very severe flooding, a total disaster. 1000 people have been displaced, the damage is enormous. Poor people.

As I mentioned, I am lucky, we are in the south-west of Slovenia, it rains heavily but there are no floods. And I have two beers in front of me, one Polish and one German.
I am really lucky.

Turbo Prop Imperial Pils

Brewed by Brauerei Bosch, Bad Laasphe, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 6.5% ABV, 35 IBU.
It's Imperial Pilsener style, which means bottom-fermented lager with modern American hops. Similar to German Pils but with more pronounced bitterness and higher alcohol. Almost like an IPA.

What do the Master Brewers say?
Ugh... nothing, except that you can buy it online with PayPal but only in Germany... anyway, I got it in the Hofer store in a Beer Box ...

The beer is cloudy golden in color, the head is average and disappears quickly. It smells of hops and citrus. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly. On the palate, there is a pronounced hop bitterness, as well as a solid malt sweetness. Citrus and caramel aromas in the background.
In the aftertaste, the hop bitterness lingers for quite some time, but everything else quickly disappears.

Very good beer, refreshing and tasty. The best approximation to the IPA style by German brewers so far, although there is also a malt sweetness, not just hop bitterness.
Very OK, just citrus, and malt, probably hence the caramel notes and no other additives or flavours.

Today is not a meme but info to see what the future holds for me (us). Original Kalea BeerBox bought in Hofer store, just for #beertasting!

Let's move forward!

Califia West Coast IPA

Brewed by Browar Trzech Kumpli, Tarnów, Lesser Poland, Poland.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 7.0% ABV, IBU 70. It's IPA style, hoppy, bitter, and dry with fruit aromas.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Classic example of West Coast India Pale ale - pale, dry, highly attenuated with crisp and clean finish. No trace of caramel at all.
It welcomes you with lots of aromas of classic C-hops of the American beer revolution: Columbus, Centennial and Cascade supported with new wave Citra. Strong bitterness balanced with malt and alcohol backbone.
Califia - the spirit of California. We want you to experience the unique, zesty aroma of American hops to the very last drop. If you’re after a pint of something strong, dry, bitter but very, very aromatic – Califia is definitely for you.

Well, I won't say I've been waiting for something like this, but we'll see if it's all true ...

The beer is golden and cloudy in color, the head is average. Very pronounced, almost disturbing hop aroma. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly, I taste a strong bitterness on the palate, with a hint of malty sweetness in the background and very little grapefruit aroma.
The bitterness is prevalent throughout, even in the aftertaste when it slowly fades.

Definitely an IPA, but I expected more. The strong bitterness masked all the other aromas that should have been present. I am a little disappointed. Maybe too old? I bought it in Poland about three months ago, well, the best before date on the can is the end of September this year. I don't know, it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would, although it has very good reviews on Ratebeer and Untappd.
Comparing it with the previous one, I find the previous one much tastier and fresher.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beer? Again, something from my #newtunes yesterday's post. Lance Lopez, new name for me, blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In this song he sounds like a Led Zeppelin :)

Lance Lopez - Voyager: Sunrise, Voyager, I Am Ra

Thank you for your attention.

I'm not a big fan of IPA'S or really hoppy beers so I doubt that I would like either of those (maybe the Turbo Pop??) but I like the marketing on the can 😂

I like IPAs, but not if they overdose on bitterness. Cheers! 🍻 !BEER

Yes I agree. I often find them...oily, in a way.
