Beer Tasting: Brooklyn Defender IPA & Perlenzauber Pale Ale

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

Winter or spring? Snow? Well, here I can say that it's cold in the morning, no snow in the valley, and mostly cloudy and warm all day, for a few days now. Soon, next week, the carnival will start and we will chase winter away. It's time to get ready and since today is #beersaturday again, for the 344th time in a row, I'm going to go for a workout 😜

I took two chilled bottles out of the fridge, one German and one American. And I will be happy to open them. First, one with less alcohol.

🍻 😎 🍻

Brooklyn Defender IPA

Brewed by Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, New York, United States.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.5% ABV, IBU 50.
It's an IPA-style beer, hop-forward, bitter, and with fruit notes.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Defend Beer with Brooklyn Defender IPA, our heroically hopped golden IPA featuring strong notes of tropical fruit, well-muscled hop bitterness, and an incredibly dry finish. Cape not required. Brooklyn Defender IPA is proud to be the official beer of New York Comic Con.

As far as I remember, I used to drink beer from this brewery, but on draught. I bought this in an E.Leclerc store.

The beer is bright yellow, the head is average. It has no smell. A sip goes down the throat easily. On the palate, I taste a solid hop bitterness, with hints of tropical aromas at the back, mango and citrus in particular.
In the aftertaste, a solid bitterness remains, but the rest slowly disappears.

Tasty and juicy. Nice brewed, just as it should be. A classic IPA, perhaps a little shy but good. Nothing distinctive to point out. Here it's only available in E.Leclerc stores, there are not many in Slovenia, actually only two, one in Ljubljana and one in Maribor so I don't think it will be a regular in my fridge.

🍻 😎 🍻

Instead of a meme today, here's a photo of the sky when it started to get dark. From an afternoon walk. If it wasn't a bit foggy it would have been an even better photo I think.

🍻 😎 🍻

Perlenzauber Pale Ale

Brewed by GrΓ€fl. von Mengersen'sche Dampfbrauerei Rheder, Brakel-Rheder, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany for KALEA.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.8% ABV, IBU 35.
It's Pale Ale style, generic West beer, hop-forward with a balanced malt profile.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Kalea's Perlenzauber is Gipsy Brewing and is brewed annually at different breweries. The master brewers at the renowned Schlossbrauerei Rheder are responsible for this year's edition, a fresh Pale Ale. The skillful combination of Magnum, Chinook, Citra, and Mosaic hops gives this refreshing beer its unique and characteristic aroma.

Well, I didn't know that it was brewed in a different brewery every year. But it was in the last Kalea Beer Box from last year.

The beer is clear amber in color, the head is average. It smells more of malt than hops. The sip goes smoothly down the throat, with a pleasant hop bitterness dominating the palate, followed by a malty sweetness. I also taste caramel, honey, and bread.
In the aftertaste, the malty sweetness and aromas disappear and the hop bitterness remains for a while.

This is also delicious and juicy. Very good, bitterness almost like IPA beers, but also sweetness of caramel and honey. A bit sweeter than the classic Pale Ale beers I know, but that's probably because of the German influence and their tradition :)
According to what the master brewers say, it will be different next year because it will be from a different brewery.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beer? Nothing from my #newtunes post yesterday. YT suggested a live album, just released, from a cult band of mine, which unfortunately I didn't get to see and listen to live. Magnificent!

I don't really trust beers that are transported across the globe, they simply have to lose something on the way. You can never maintain the right conditions for them (well, unless somebody would pay a fortune for that). That is why the US IPA was so plain, perhaps.

What do I know, I often order different beers and they are all transported from somewhere. In fact, all bottled beers always lose something because of the light they are exposed to, from the USA it takes a bit longer to transport, the same from Japan or Thailand :)
Well, for Sierra Nevada beers, for example, I drank them in the US and here in Europe, and I didn't feel a big difference. Of course, draft beer is different, but it still has to be transported... maybe @zekepickleman would know more about this... 🍻

Well, that's a tradition here and the date of Carnival is determined by Easter, 47 days before the biggest Christian holiday. Next year will be on March the 4th, this year is on February the 10th to 13th. :)
