The Company Policy 👩‍💻

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

“So, you got to the company, and they told you not to pick up your call?” Titi still couldn’t believe her ears as she repeated her question to Catherine, who had just been employed by a big tech company in Kansas. Catherine just came back from work and was sharing her experience with her housemate and best friend. It was her first day at work. She was surprised at the strict rules made by the organization. She had always dreamt about working with the company, looking at the elegance, beauty, and various exceptional designs of their building via TV and online commercials. However, getting the job seemed different from all she had seen from the outside.

Catherine likes talking over the phone; one of her biggest shockers was the company policy, which directs every worker never to pick up a call except in the company phone booth, which has a camera monitoring every discussion! “If an important call comes in and I am far away from the phone booth, do I have to run to the booth or miss the call?” Catherine was irritated as she shared her predicament with Titi. Titi wanted to ask about the other rules, but she felt that would make her look inconsiderate. At least they should find a way around the current problem before raising another one.

“What are you going to do about it?”, Titi asked with expressions of concern written all over her face. Catherine’s facial expression in response to Titi’s question was that of a child who got lost in the woods and accepted his fate never to go home. Titi snapped her fingers and jumped up. “This is not so hard, babe,” she said. “You can still chat; just inform your important contacts to chat you up if it’s urgent”, she added. Catherine could only hug her friend in appreciation, as she didn’t even think about that. She was so focused on the problem that she wasn’t even thinking about the way out. “Titi, I think you’re just like the route behind our phone booth, my escape route!”, Catherine said.

“Sometimes the way out of problems is right in front of us, but we worry too much about the problem rather than finding a solution”, Titi replied. “Better be grateful you have me as your emergency exit”, she added. Catherine playfully threw a pillow at her. "Emergency, my foot; you couldn’t even escape that”, she said.

*********END********

I see an in-house phone booth where visitors and workers at the company can make and receive calls. It is a transparent booth, and behind it is a route to an emergency exit.

It indeed is a long run to that booth plus there's only one.
I can imagine how annoying it is if all employers have private conversations.
Shouldn't private be private instead of letting others "enjoy" loud conversations?
That cam would be a good reason for me not to accept a phone call.
In case of need a text will do.

Thank you so much for your comment. It summarizes Catherine's dilemma and text will definitely solve the issue. Have a blessed weekend @wakeupkitty

I guess workers would only have to pick up private calls at their own convenience and this would mean waiting until you get home. Maybe the company is ensuring safety and trying to avoid the leakage of valid informations.

@pearlie123 I believe that's a way to view it. Some companies have restrictions to prevent leakage of vital information. Thanks a lot for your comment.
