Weekly Engagement, Wk 16— Vacation in the Village

Welcome to my blog!

It was August break. When my mother finally permitted me to travel with her younger sister to the village. I became very excited to meet my grandparents, my cousins, my nephew, and my nieces.

I enjoyed this vacation running around the village, going to the stream, going to the farm for firewood, and planting okra and maize in Mama's small farm in the backyard.

I loved everything—when my aunt used firewood to cook in the other building opposite the one we slept in, and when we all gathered plates around the big pot.
We all will gather around the table; grandma, grandpa, my aunties and my cousins. The little ones will wince and pout whenever they notice the difference in the size of the meat shared.
After dinner mama and Papa will tell folk tales, with us gathered around them, under the full moonlight.

I can reminisce most of our family prayer, my aunties would lead in praise and worship, we would sing and dance, trying to impress Papa on who was the best dancer, and then Mama and Papa would take turns praying. Mama's prayer’s always the longest. All of us will open our eyes and look at each other making funny faces, while Mama keeps on praying.

I can still remember the toilet I couldn't use, I was so scared I would fall inside, or something would jump from the hole and bite me. My aunty had to find another means for me whenever I wanted to do it.

I loved the stream we swam with laughter. Lots of fun was always going on under the water. Boys and girls —sensual touches that caused the blissful giggles and chuckles.
I didn't find any of this water romance funny, so I sat on a tree trunk all by myself, watching their sinful acts.

I loved the stone soup we cooked with leaves. Grass seed will serve as pepper, while the gravel and small stones will be the meat and fish.

I can remember my last visit to the stream. It wasn't the usual stream I'm familiar with. I wanted to do everything my nephew did, he used empty jerrican to swim across the stream. I wanted to do the same so he threw me the jerrican. I climbed on it and pushed myself forward into the deeper part of the water.
I didn't know how to use it and I didn't know how to swim. The jerrican capsized and turned me into the water. My life flashed before my eyes, I didn't drown because people rushed in to rescue me.
From that day till date, I haven't tried crossing any water body, not even a swimming pool!

I later told Mama I couldn't stay anymore, I was tired. I traveled back to my parent before the weekend.
I still have these precious memories even when I've not visited them for about 10 years now.

Made with love 💕

Sometimes these vacations are the best ones, when you connect with family and do simple everyday things together. This is when some special memories are created:)
