Food is life. Give me the rice and beans.

Hello, everyone.

I welcome you all to my blog. We all have that one food we can never get tired of; we can eat it for days and still crave it, and at the same time, there are some foods we can go months without craving it or even remembering its existence. Even before Hivenaija dropped the prompt, some of us have been living in a world where we eat only one food for days without getting tired of the particular food, and sometimes, even when the end result of cooking is bad, we still eat it without noticing that it's bad.

Indeed, the environment we live in has a way of affecting our feeding and the particular food we end up loving or making our favorite. I am a living testimony to that; the environment in which I grew up actually forced me to love a particular food. I so much dislike swallow foods and can go months without eating them, all thanks to the environment in which I grew up. My dad always says I am not an Igbo man because I do not like swallow food. It's believed that Igbo men are known for their love of swallow (garri, fufu, ponded yam), but not me.

I was born and brought up in the northern part of Nigeria, where garri (cassava flakes) was very expensive, and since my parents are Igbo, they still preferred garri to other things used to prepare swallow in the north. Due to the cost, we hardly ate swallow but had varieties of food that had to do with rice, beans, spaghetti, and so on, but the combo of rice and beans turned out to be topping the chart, and so it happened that I grew up to love this particular food so much.

I can eat rice and beans for days without getting tired of it. Here in school, since I am in charge of my feeding, I eat eat rice and beans almost every day without complaining. The only time I change my food is when friends that come visiting start to complain. I might change to please them a little before I fall back to my favorite.

I believe there are also many like me out here; rice and beans turn out to be a lot of people's favorite food. So if we are to live in a world where one is allowed to eat only one food, my pick will be rice and beans. It doesn't matter how it's prepared, whether jellof or stew, I am eating it without thinking twice.

Why Rice and Beans?
Trust me, I wish I had tangible reasons why I prefer to eat rice and beans for the rest of my life if we lived in a world where we are meant to eat just one food for ever. I just enjoy this particular food, no matter how it's prepared.

  • It is easy to prepare: Rice and beans turn out to be one of the easiest foods to prepare, unlike when you are preparing food like pounded yam.

  • Quite cheap to prepare: Unless you really want to prepare rice and beans with an expensive taste, you don't have to spend so much to get them prepared. It's one of the meals we students can get our hands on without going beyond our budget.

Thanks for reading my post.

I love rice and beans jollof especially when it is made with palm oil. The taste and aroma are always different and I enjoy it a lot.

Our environment influences a lot of things about us including food. Thanks for participating in this week's prompt.
