Talking about the menstrual cycle for me is something that makes me think about how much we change as the years go by. In my teenage years, which I enjoyed very much because my menstruation started a little late within the normal age, specifically at fourteen years old, in those years I didn't really suffer like other girls. I had a menstruation that did not last more than three days and I had almost no symptoms that made me have a bad time. I had some mood swings, but I also think that age played a big part in that. When I was close to seventeen years old I started to really become aware that I had to go to the doctor and get checkups, one of the exams I did was echoes to see if everything inside was okay. It turns out that in one of those echoes I had a small ball in one of my ovaries, the doctor told me at that time that I had polycystic ovary, my mother was also prone to have cysts in the ovaries so I probably had them because of genetics. At the time I was told that it was nothing to be alarmed about and that actually many women have this syndrome, that the cyst was about the size of a grain of salt and that I didn't have to worry about it.

As time went by many changes happened in my life, I had a lot of stress, a bad diet and many mood swings. I had to go back to the doctor to find out what was happening to me, many of the things that were happening in my life were changes that maybe I was not prepared to face and that affected me so I started to have treatment for my mental health. When you start to take care of your mental health there are many things that have to be checked, both internally and the organism that everything is working well, from the neurological part to the psychological part. I was complaining a lot about my hair falling out and I was very worried about my overall health, not least because I was dealing with too many things that I was not prepared for. When you go to a psychologist and they recommend going to a psychiatrist, the psychiatrist will have you undergo different tests to rule out that the emotional problem is not due to a neurological or hormonal problem. The thyroid test is very important and the doctors even tell you that you have to repeat it many times because the results are not always correct. As some of you may know the thyroid is in charge of regulating our body and if it is not working properly then you get these emotional imbalances where even though you have no reason to feel bad, you feel depressed and there are many changes both physically and emotionally.

When you take certain medications you have to make sure that your menstrual cycle is as normal and regular as possible. I used to not pay much attention to this but now I write down the day my period starts and so I write down the dates so I know if my cycle is regular or if there are changes. I also notice that just a week before my menstruation cycle starts I have mood and appetite changes, in mood I get a little more sentimental or sad also things can affect me more than normal. I feel very hot even though the weather is fine and my appetite makes me want to eat certain things like sweets or bread hahaha, I feel that my appetite opens up a lot but with those specific things. Keeping a calendar with the dates of each menstrual cycle is very important, also going to the doctor and checking that everything is ok no matter how old you are can make a big difference.

These polyps and cysts can really create a havoc in the monthly cycle. Cyst is a very common problem for the females but if they are not taken care off then gradually can lead to bigger problems. Good that you are now going for regular check ups and paying attention to your body.

You are absolutely right, regarding the importance of looking after both physical and mental health, particularly when dealing with something as complicated as our menstrual cycles. Clearly, you've experienced a lot, but it's also evident that these experiences have taught you much.

Your approach towards your health is truly admirable. By monitoring your cycles, observing changes in your mood and appetite, and seeking medical advice, you're actively managing your health. It's important to remember that mental health significantly contributes to our overall well-being.

Your journey serves as a reminder for us all women to tune in to our bodies and seek assistance when necessary. Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights. It's always enriching to learn from each other's journeys. 😊
