A Typical Seagull of the City / Show Me A Photo Contest Round 160

Hi feathered friends! iI is difficult to recognize male birds from females especially if you are not experienced with feathered birds.

I've taken pictures of some of the herring gulls (Larus argentatus) that abound here in Vigo, but to differentiate between males and females I went to the web.

At first I thought that the ones with brown spots on their wings were the males, I also thought that the white with grey and the ones with brown spots were different species, but I was far from the truth.

According to what I read on the internet these two birds are the same species, only that as the winters go by their feathers change color and when they are adults that have spent at least 4 winters their feathers turn white and gray on the wings, also the eyes turn yellow as well as the beak.

A glance at the camera!

These gulls do not have many differences between the male and female, their feathers are the same in all stages, the male is only slightly larger than the female.

In the image above, which is the image of my entry to the contest, I show a specimen that is not clear if it is male or female, what is certain by its plumage is that it has only been on its back for one winter. It is still a very young gull.

As I don't know if it is male or female, it can be either, I put a tie on it to make it a perfect gentleman. I hope I am not violating any contest rules! 😁

Well a fact is that the most colorful are the males, in most birds!

Ahaha, I like that gentleman. Such a cute tie.😉
I must admit I was living by the sea all my life, but also recently learned about the seagulls and why they are same species, although look different.
Thank you very much for your delightful entry! 🙂

Hola Cositav. 😁
