REBRANDING THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN NIGERIA

"What if" There are things I can actually do. Currently there's a lot of things going on in the Nigeria educational system that requires change. If I'm to be honest, the Nigerian educational curriculum itself is not standard enough to be compared with that of even nearby countries. Today we see students graduating without a solid theoretical knowledge of the course they claim to have studied, which is not their fault if the parameters are right. There are no active laws (rules and regulations) implemented in the Nigerian educational system, and the body that claim to be in charge of this otherwise known as the ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASSU) alongside every other associated unions in collaboration with them only know how to go on strike that takes several years because the Federal government delay in paying them their dues.

Apart from this, it's evident that there are a lot of unqualified professors in our institutions who do not know "jack" when it comes to a practical approach to the study. Many of them became professors from the broken system mentioned above, so how do you expect them to make qualified professionals out of the students they teach? I'm not saying all lecturers are like this though, but a majority of lecturers are, and it's part of the Major things killing our educational system today. How can one expect a system whose curriculum is almost as old as the professors teaching them to train students that will meet up with the world's standard?

Although there are a few private universities that go the extra mile to ensure their students meet world standards, these universities are too expensive for the common man to acquire, banishing 80% of the student population to learn from the scarbs of unqualified professors. The knowledge I work with today in my field of study was gained through personal hardwork and development. In my time in school, I go to class everyday looking at my lecturer and saying things they don't know shit about. One time we (students) had a meeting with the school authority, and the engineering lecturers were mandated to set up the mics for the meeting. It was a shame that if we students had not come to their rescue, the entire engineering faculty would have been mocked.

Now this experience among many is the reason why if I get an opportunity to change at least one thing from the educational system, it would have to be the system itself because it is broken beyond repair. This would mean removing those incompetent folks from the seat of power in our educational system and replacing them with those who have proven records that show how much they have passion for education, and wish to also create a change in our institutions. These are people I'm sure that they would ensure the curriculum is updated, and students graduating can be believed to at least be averagely qualified for the course they spent years studying. Even though the government will still have it's role to play at the end, I believe the right system would have the right knowledge to tackle the government lapses.

No doubt with what you have said, a new educational system is possible and achievable. Thanks for sharing

You are well on point bro, the educational system is broken and restructuring it will cost a lot which people are not ready for. I was surprised to know that people even get a lecturer job with connection whereas it should be about qualifications.

Things have gone really bad for the system and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

The curriculum needs to be revised to meet global standard. You're right. Intelligent students go extra mile, beyond the classroom to make the difference

Yes you are right... The things I learned were things I struggled to learn

Many of the lecturer are not even qualified like you said. Some of them just got there though connection. It is not a very good thing for an educational system.

That's very correct. Credibility should be a factor to always consider

I agree with you. Some teachers that can even do more feel reluctant to do so, because they don’t have the passion.

Nice post. Kudos.

You made a valid point there.....the educational system and it's curriculum needs to change so that graduates can be armed with the right knowledge.
