LET'S MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Writing this on post, I can't help but remember one of the songs sang by USA For Africa

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

Thinking about this now I realize that our environment is our own, and the little things we do to take care of it are very important. I was going to work early this week and there was heavy traffic on the federal road I usually take to work. It's a commercial area, so there are big firms, banks and eateries located at the roadside. The cause of the traffic was the flood opposite one of the most developed oil firms in the country shell. One the other side is another very popular restaurant and bank in the country Genesis and GTB.

The funny thing about it is that a very big drainage system cuts across these firms, but the flood came because the drainage is blocked by dirt. If you think about it, you don't need a prophet to tell you that the dirt came from pedestrians passing the road everyday. It's funny how people eat and throw away the remnants on the road. This is a habit exhibited by a lot of Nigerians and I will say as much as 95%. I remember during one of my theater rehearsals, we were going to act in a church, and we got permission to try out an all-night rehearsal in the church and also use the church altar so we could master our movement.

A lady bought airtime printed on paper and during rehearsals and threw it on the altar after recharging her phone. She threw it in a way that showed it was a habit very used to her, everyone couldn't help it but shout out after seeing what she did. I just smiled looking at her and those shouting at her because they were all the same. The only reason the people there shouted was because she was on the altar meaning it was out of a religious belief that the altar is a sacred place. Those shouting had already littered the church premises and inside the church itself with all kinds of dirt from things they ate and used. There were bins where these things should go, but they chose to litter them on the floor, but shouted at the lady for doing the same thing they did in a different place.

My friends always laugh at my habit of keeping dirt in my pocket until I find a proper bin to dispose them. If I should wear a trouser without a pocket or maybe I see I can't put it in my pocket for one reason or another, I would try as much as possible to pack it and hold onto it until I find a place to dispose. I feel even though I'm quite insignificant compared to everyone who engages in such an act, it is my way of making the world a better place. That flood I mentioned earlier was caused by Nigerians who lack environmental hygiene, but it is suffered by everyone who uses that road as a means of reaching their destination. I wouldn't want to be a part of those who make other peoples life hard because of my decisions, so I try as much as possible to avoid littering and ensure those around me don't do it.

The authorities do not need to do everything for us. We have just as much chance to make our world good for all of us

But then, an habit cultivated by parents and passed down to children, what would you expect

Humans have little or no respect for their environment without knowing an healthy environment constitute to an healthy life. Trashing our environment has been an habit of humans for a long period and despite the fact that we knew the health challenges of this habit, we still keep on doing it.

I remember a time when the government placed a very huge waste bin almost at every street in panseke, Abeokuta Ogun State, could you believe that people still refused to dump their trash in than waste bin, they preferred to dump it in a drainage system near by and this attitude made me feel sick, like what is wrong with people. The same with our lecturer rooms also, they are different waste bin at every corner but no student will still drop dirt on the floor.

I could remember a time I was traveling by bus, there was a waste bin in this bus, beside me there was a woman eating groundnut not too far from the waste bin would you believe that this woman kept throwing the groundnut shell on the follow. So annoying.

Hmmmmm. The day we begin to take responsibility is the day things begin to shift.

God will just help us because it is not in the hands of the government alone.

It is our world, if we allow it decay, we would be the one to suffer the consequences. I am also guilty of not taking good care of my environment, throwing refuse almost everywhere.thanka for the message, am currently working on it

You have said nothing but the truth. The rate at which people litter the ground is appalling where clearly there is a bin where it can be disposed properly.

I hope people listen and change for better. Thanks for sharing.
