BROKEN PROMISES

Please don't leave me, I know I'm a lot of work, I know I act up sometimes, I know I have hurt you countless times than I can imagine, but you've stayed with me in all. I know I don't deserve your love, and there's nothing I would say or do that will change what I have done, coupled with the things I have been doing. I have no excuse whatsoever to give for what I have done because you do not deserve any of it, that's why I'm begging. I don't even deserve to beg, but please don't leave me.

Sam looked at Kate as she begged for his forgiveness with all the emotions she was pouring out, he couldn't find the words to reply to her, so he stared at her for about an hour watching her beg until she too couldn't find the words to beg with anymore. It was only after seeing her sobbing hopelessly without words that he finally spoke anyway.

WHY?

It was the only word that could come out of his empty mind…

Kate; I have no reason Sam, I have no excuse. Punish me if you will, strip me naked, and order that I parade the entire kingdom with strips of all kinds on my back, but please forgive me, don't leave me, Sam.

Seeing Kate say these words, his mind became clearer with several wandering thoughts parading his mind but he already knew his decision from the on set. Looking at her on her knees bleeding on the edges of the ice rocks, ending her agony was the only thing he could not figure out how to go about. So he tried to speak up with more understandable words than with phrases he normally spoke. With his deep soft tone, he said

Why subject yourself to such agony, even when I told you there's nothing you would ever do to make me leave you.

Now Kate could no longer believe the words she was hearing from Sam. Hearing his words sounded strange even though she had heard him say those words a thousand times, she felt a cold sensation going through her spine, with an immediate need to use the other room. Her stomach grumbled in relief at what she had thought to be the end of her, it was as though the pressure was taken off her shoulders knowing all was now well.

You are not going to leave me?

Kate asked raising her head slightly up, so she could really see his face as he gave an answer she was now expecting

Why would I leave you?
I can't leave you for a plate of chicken, and it's high time you stop being dramatic over little things.

Now Kate could really feel the edges of the ice rocks she was kneeling on piercing through her skin as hot chills now ran up her spine giving her an instant migraine. But then again none of these felt as heavy as the realization that Sam still does not know what she has done. Trying to figure out how she would tell him all over again was as though hell was burning within her and she was going to explode until she let go of the only thing that she could let go of to free herself from the pressure.

Puuuuuffffffffffffsssssssss

Oh my… what did I just do… (Kate speaking within herself)

Sam; did you just…

Kate; I'm sorry, I'm really sorry, it wasn't intentional. I I…

Trying to get up, she's realizing her keens can no longer come up. She tried coming up sideways, but it didn't work either. The ice rocks were so sharp that her shivering soft hands could not hold down on them for proper balance.

Sam realized her predicament quickly and rushed to help her up. Immediately his rough strong hands got a grip of her, he knew something more than the ordinary was wrong with Kate. His suspicion started when he perceived there was something in the wind other than the odor of her troubled stomach, he could feel the wind surrounding her wasn't right. It is how he feels when something is missing in his perfect war strategy that could be crucial to his winning or losing.

What is wrong?

Jacking Kate up immediately he got hold of her.

I killed your brother. I swear it was an accident. I only wanted to scare him away, I didn't mean to pierce so deep but he wouldn't stop even when I begged him to.

Sam had been mourning the loss of his brother from when he heard about it on the battlefield. He vowed to find out who was responsible for his brother's death, only to find out it was his beloved. Cold chills ran through his spine, and his strong steady hands suddenly became feeble as he couldn't find the strength to hold on to her. He stumbled backward but was able to get a grip, looking right into Kate's eyes hoping it was one of her usual lies.

I'm so sorry Sam, we were playing in the woods with your second horse, and he was making the horse run towards me, I just held the dagger you gave me to scare him and make the horse scared too. The horse got scared and threw him off, I tried catching him and didn't realize the dagger was still in my hand. By the time I realized, it had cut too deep. I didn't know what to do, I didn't want anyone to find me again in such a compromising situation talk less with your brother.

Your Squier saw me there before I ran, I thought he had told you that was why I was already begging when you called to see me in such a dreadful place as the ice mountain. I know you only come here before a battle, or when you are about to make a dreadful decision. I'm sorry Sam, I thought you were going to leave me after you heard, I know you will definitely leave me now.

Kate tried kneeling down again, but her knees could no longer find the strength to go down.

Sam was a warrior prince, next in line to take over from his father, Kate, an outcast, who had made Sam defile a long line of generational tradition that forbade royalties from marrying outcasts because of a curse of the outcast taking a life. Kate wasn't just an outcast, she was an outcast because of the curse placed on her lineage. They had Viking blood, meaning they had at least 100 kills before they were killed by the sword. Kate had 99 before Sam's brother.

Sam was never good with emotions, but for the first time, emotions clouded his judgment as he didn't know what to make of Kate's atrocity and his love for her. He turned back in a moment of silence, as he pictures his 13-year-old brother dying in the hands of his beloved.

Leave this Kingdom, and never return.

Sam spoke with his authoritative princely voice, and Kate knew better than to say a word back to him

Wait (Sam spoke as he turned back to look at Kate with tears in his eyes)

I love you Kate, but I would rather lose you to life than lose you to death. Go to a place I will never know and stay there for 20 years. I make a promise to wait for you until you return. But promise me you will not die in 20 years.

(If an outcast can live for another 20 years after their 100th kill, their curse will be broken.)

Kate; I promise Sam.

THE END.

THIS IS MY RESPONSE TO THE INK WELL WEEKLY FICTION PROMPT

This is a story of love, tragedy, and promises that goes beyond boundaries.
I can say that it demonstrates the complexities of human relationships and also the weight of choices. Well drafted.

The Prince tried to have tendered such mercy. If I were the one, I don't know if I would be able to control that urge to strike back.

Love is blind though🤷

Indeed love is blind... Tragedy tough is a great test for it

Sam had to leave? What a way to end this lovely story, leaving the mind to ponder on the rest. I like the way the love scenes played out. Nicely crafted.
