ADULTHOOD (TAKING RESPONSIBILITY)

avatar
(Edited)

The definition of adulthood is responsibility, when you become an adult, you take responsibility for your future. These were the words of my pastor the year I turned 18 during my 1st year in the higher institution. It took me time to realize the meaning of those words, but gradually with time I realized it and that was when I can say maturity started for me. To date, I still find it hard to believe I'm an adult sometimes and old enough to make certain decisions. For example, the first time my mother spoke to me about getting a partner I looked at her like ” Wasn't it just yesterday you were pursuing my girlfriends 😂” but then again I saw my age mates getting married and I was like ”ooo I'm old enough 😂”

In Nigeria, a person is regarded as an adult when they turn 18, although I believe that there's no official age for adulthood because age does not define maturity. A person can be a 68-year-old baby and another an 18-year-old man or woman. The difference is their ability to handle the heat of responsibility. Adulthood is an accountability stage also and it's so sad that a lot of people do not prepare for that stage of life until they get there and find out no one treats them like the children they wish to be. For that reason, though they are mature in physique and stature, they are still children at heart. And even when these people become parents, you will just find out that it's children giving birth to children because they do not know a thing about parenting.

Some years back I had a colleague who although was 33 years old, still lived with his parents who were feeding him. Leaving with his parents wasn't the issue, the issue was that he wasn't even ready to leave his parent's house talkless starting a relationship. He was only working because his father instructed him to look for a job and he was still collecting monthly allowance from his father. Among all his siblings who are doing very well, he's the only one not interested in starting something for himself even though his father was ready to give him money to start up a business of his own and be like his siblings, he was not ready for such a life and decided he was happy with how his life was. I do not know how he is now because I can't keep such friends but if he's anything like how he was Then, it will be too sad.

Today we find out that girls develop faster and boys in most cases, I wasn't like that though, maybe because responsibility came early for me, but then in the average circumstance, an 18-year-old girl can be called an adult not just because of her physique, but also because she is mentally and psychologically mature enough to take on life responsibilities on her own. But like I said in the average circumstances, if she is not ready to take on responsibilities, she's still a child. On average too, most 18-year-old boys still wanna be men who still prioritize having fun over making real-life decisions men take. But I think a very primitive thing about boys is that though they mature slowly, they become a chunk load of experiences when they finally decide to act like adults. At that point the man in them comes out, and they begin to act way older than their age. But again, it's only my opinion about adulthood, I will appreciate contributions in the comments.

Just by the way, I forgot to mention it's power up day, and I decided to join in for the month to power up 10 hive. After two months of powering down because of some financial challenges, it's time to start building my hive power again... And I hope to get back to 1000 HP as soon as possible... Hopefully this month. But for the month of May, I settle at 804HP...

Thirty-three years old living with his parents, if it's some African e they would throw him out of the house to start a life for himself, I think in cases like that it's solely dependant on the upbringing of the child.

You're very correct adulthood has to do with responsibilities, not age.

Some time kids do not get out or do not want to get out of the comfort zone thay have when they are with parents. Some times it's fault of parents also as they do not push their kids to go out and take responsibility.

Yes that is very true. Parents can play a big role in teaching their children to take responsibility

A thirty three still living with his parents can never be matured as expected because he has not experience the outside world. I wonder how he will take care of his home if he eventually get married or his mother will be living with him?

We really need to be men and women that take responsibilities of our lives. Thatbis only when we start growing
Some of us were lucky to have started right from a little stage of life and today its helping us go higher

Some can't grow because the environment they are in can't allow it. Others are just lazy

Chai, I see mummy's boy at age 33 and after now he will marry one innocent girl and start frustrating her life. Ọ dịkwa egwu. Truth be told, there are some adult babies and baby adults. Being responsible is what one decides to do, it can't be forced

I have met a few men and women who have decided not to grow up. I avoid such people. They have nothing to teach me. Maturity can be such a fickle thing if we look at it a certain way. Young girls mocked by their peers for being too serious and young boys enduring the heat of societal pressure alone only to be told they are not trying hard enough. In the end, these two groups have to decide on what they listen to and what they believe.

Oh yes you are very correct. Life itself is not fair. And growing above the odds is a personal decision

Your girlfriends?? or you mean girlfriend? 🙄. Girl's tend to mature faster because of the burden of the family unit being bestowed on us. We are thought responsibility at a very tender age more than our make counterpart. So you see us growing with the mindset of being a caretaker especially of our spouse and children in the future.

All the best on a sound comeback of your hp.
