A slight breeze flowed through the bonfire as the six friends watched the flames rise and crackle. Glancing upward into the cover of night, Ginger shivered, then wrapped the shawl around her shoulders. The warm sand accepted her cold feet as she dug deeper inside, aching inside with self-doubt. The weekend retreat at the vacation beach cottage would end that night. The moonlight cast a shadow on the pier behind them. Waves pounded against the pier as though summoning the crew to take advantage of its delights. But they sat rigid, all eyes on her.

Seething Ginger couldn't hold it. Bitter words mean to hurt and evoke a reaction from any of them couldn't help but rush out.

"You rich, spoiled brat that never worked a day in your life!" Ginger slammed her fists on the recliner. With her feet, she tossed sand in Harvey's direction.

Startled, Harvey quipped, wiping sand from his blanket, "maybe in a past life."

Then he thought about Ginger's mood lately. He didn't know the reason behind it, so felt compelled to respond with a stronger rebuttal. "But life circumstances change. We've all encountered hardships. Just because we don't dwell on them and fall into self-pity doesn't mean we didn't go through some things. I've known you since high school. If you'd take your head out of your behind and stop being so self-absorbed, you'd see that!"

The others shook their heads in agreement. Ginger could see all five of her friends had taken a side against her without even inquiring into her dilemma. She momentarily forgot that she hadn't confided in them.

Even though the night was thick with darkness, they could see through the flames that Ginger was in a dark mood.

In a shaking, rage-filled voice, she yelled, ""It could be worse. At least you've got your health."

Silently, they rose. One of the friends broke out with their rendition of Ginger's favorite oldies' song. She jumped up. The blanket fell to the ground.

"Stop it. Just stop!" she yelled. "Don't you realize that this may be the last time we see each other!."*

A hush fell over the bonfire. They looked from one to the other before settling on Ginger.

Margaret rushed over to Denise. "It was just for old times. Apologies. We didn't mean to upset you. What do you mean by at least we got our health and the last time we'll see each other ?"

Ginger plopped down into the recliner. She leaned back and looked at the stars. Through streaming tears she stammered, "They found a mass. It's inoperable. Maybe if I'd taken more notice two years ago, it could have been diagnosed sooner."

Combined questions swirled around the group.

Once they settled down, the simmering fire caught their dazed expressions. For an hour, they remained silent. Then, Margaret stood up and faced Ginger. She turned to the others. In unison, they nodded, then joined Margaret.

Harvey spoke now in a somber tone. "Do you know why the five of us have bonded these past twenty years?"

Ginger choked back more tears. "No, I don't. And why didn't you include me?"

Harvey answered in a lighter tone now. "Because you were immersed in your own small world living life to the fullest. Like I said, we were going through some things. So, we entered into a covenant."

"What type of covenant?" Even though in agony, Ginger wiped her face. Intrigue and gossip were past times in her world that she relished.

Harvey moved closer to Ginger. He placed his hand on her body; not in an intimate manner, but searching for affliction. She stepped back in shock, but the others held her in position.

He paused at her stomach, then winced. Simultaneous, the group grabbed Ginger's arms, legs, shoulders, and head. Her feet left the ground as she was held in a lying position.

Too dazed to speak, Ginger watched as they placed her body over the smoldering fire. Instantly, the fire rose up into a heaping flame.

She screamed. But no sound came forth. She should have been scorched, but no burn marks settled on her flesh. Instantly, they release her. But she didn't fall. There she was hanging in the air. Ginger's pulse quickened as she rose higher. She no longer felt the desire to cry out for she felt no pain.

A deafening sound flooded her thoughts as half the group knelt to the ground and pounded the sand hard. The rest stood with their hands barely touching her body in thunderous claps. They all chanted and prayed.

Why am I not falling or scorched to death? Ginger questioned silently.

Interrupting her thoughts was a peculiar stretching on her shoulders. Her face contorted as she lifted her hands. She watched as long claws jutted out through her fingertips. Her skin wrinkled as it hardened. A thick, long substance flowed from her backside.

Able to touch her body, she felt her mouth; her hair; her ears, and her breasts. All gone. A long, pointed nose stuck out from her face. Suddenly, she remembered what the creature looked like she was turning in to. A Gargoyle. A hideous creature.

With a rush of desperation, Ginger screamed, "what have you done to me?"

Harvey, Margaret, and her rest of her friends smiled. In unison, they spoke, "you are healed. You are now one of us. You are with the covenant. You are eternity."

The group backed away. Ginger now stood upright inside the flames. Instantly, she burst into a million shards.

The thick shell of her body dropped off and disappeared. She settled on the sand. Margaret handed her a compact mirror.

Ginger hurriedly opened it. Her body contorted again. This time, her shoulders broadened. Small tips on either side of her body grew larger and wider. Grayish in color, they turned pure white.

She dropped the mirror as her wings enclosed her body from head to toe. Her stomach didn't hurt. Her heart didn't hurt. She was healed.

She smiled and hugged the group. Now she understood. And she was free for all eternity to go forth and heal others.

No queríamos disgustarte.

You do enjoy taking your readers by surprise! Hehe.

What a fascinating tale of friendship that quickly turns into paranormal. A gargoyle! I didn't see that coming and neither did Ginger. I wonder why her friends held off on the covenant secret for so long until she's almost dying before spilling the beans. Good part is, she gets to live for a long time. I think she can shapeshift, right? Beautifully written! Take care and have a relaxing weekend. !PIMP 💕

Her friends knew she wasn't ready to think of anyone else but herself. Yes, she will be able to shapeshift to be able to move around in the physical world so she can return to her life. This time she'll use her knowledge more wisely of what life truly means to help others.

Thanks so much for your visit and lovely compliment. I'm pleased you found my story interesting in the twist it suddenly took. I appreciate your thorough analysis as usual and your support.

Take care.

You're right. As the saying goes, no man is an island. With this new lease on life, Ginger will learn to look beyond herself for a change and think of others! 🙂
