Hello @kemmyb. You are correct in that fighting for injustice anywhere at any time is not easy. I think of what is happening to females today in the effort to control their bodies and take away their personal choices about their lives and that of their families.
It's the same concept in my period era story. The fight for one's protection of their liberties to live a free and productive life without tyranny. I was happy to see that your thorough analysis grasp the fact that this Chapter 4 focused on Vicar Tibost and his escape through the tunnel to safety.
In the 1st Chapter, Alphonse did deliver the correct information to Vicar Tibost. However, the vicar switched it and replaced it with false information, keeping the true document for himself. He made sure he gave the false document to Alphonse so that he could be captured with the information, with hopes he'd deliver the falsehoods to the Crown. If all goes well, the Crown will believe it, thus pursuing the rebellion in another direction.
In this Chapter 4, I share part of Vicar Tibost's background and reasons the fight for justice is important to him. That the vicar used Alphonse to deliver false information to the palace as part of the SOB's plan, was crucial to the group's success. With the help of Simon, capturing Alphonse as planned and taking care of him ensured nothing happened before he could deliver him to the Crown.
A big gamble the SOB took. Let's hope it works. Deceitful to Alphonse, true. But not betrayal in the sense of the word as first thought.

Thanks for shedding more light on this story! Now Vicar Tibost's actions make so much sense, hehe. A smart move there too—using Alphonse to deliver false information to the Crown though he won't be happy about it when the truth comes out. I'm rooting for the SOB and hope they succeed, then Alphonse's sufferings would be for nothing.
You're welcome. I hope I didn't divulge too much of the plot that's to be revealed in the next chapter. But then again, I realize not many read in-depth comments to stories. So I think I'm safe.
