It was the weekend. Drake flinched as shadows from beyond his bedroom window flashed through red and blue. Screeching tires spun off in a hurry as several groups of onlookers gathered nearby his front lawn. He closed the blinds and continued sorting out his used clothes for donation to his young brothers.

Finished, he took the stairs two at a time and rushed toward the back entrance leading to the kitchen.

"You might as well come face us. Running away won't solve your problem." He wasn't trying to hear his mother's shrill voice as he busied himself preparing a skimpy sandwich, slapping some mustard on one slice of meat and bread.

He took his half-sandwich with him into the living room. Might as well hash this out one last time, he thought chewing quickly.

Drake listened quietly without interruption. He could get his point across all these years without being disrespectful. But the past six months was the final straw. Weary, he began slowly so that his parents and younger siblings could absorb his meaning.

"What my brother does or doesn't choose to do with his life will have no effect on my decision to leave. But his atrocious and unethical behavior will affect the rest of you in a negative way if you don't attempt to make a change or seek him professional help."

"But he's your younger brother. It's your duty to guide him in the right direction." His mother's words fell on deaf ears.

"I've tried. I've talked enough and spent too much of my hard-earned money helping him attend school. However, I'm not my brother's savior, contrary to your and popular opinion in our family. Running away and joining the circus, as he's always threatening, may be the best thing that ever happened to him as far as growing character because the antics he performs now isn't funny."

"You'll regret this the rest of your life!" his mother shouted, shaking her fist dangerously close to his face.

"I'll bear that cross when I reach the shores of my new destination. And finally, I'm not waiting around for the next raid of my room. In the meantime, I suggest you take some of those free pills he gave you from his pharmaceutical business he runs out of his room. If they don't kill you, they may help calm your guilt over his lack of proper upbringing at your hands."

His father interrupted. "How dare you speak to your mother that way!" His father felt it his duty to chime in every once in a while else he'd get the boot from the master bedroom that night.

"How dare You place that burden on me when apparently you didn't do that good of a job with him. I wish I could take the younger ones. Hopefully, I can return when I'm settled. Now excuse me. I need to finish packing else I'll be late for my train."

With that, Drake looked from one to the other, shook his head, then waded through separated several piles of debris before leaving the living room.

Once inside his bedroom, he plopped down on the bed and stared blankly in the mirror. He didn't recognize himself. Grown up for real now. I don't belong to these people, he reasoned, having felt he was marooned years ago and left to deal with this family. But, he couldn't believe he'd followed through with his decision. And in doing so released the frustrations that plagued him for too long.

He collected his luggage, then went downstairs. Closing the front door behind him, he walked away from his dysfunctional family of six. Staring down at the pavement, he pondered again why he felt like the odd one out of six children.

Upon reaching the station, Drake sat watching other families move in and out on the way to their destination.

Reaching into his pocket, he placed a call. Hopefully, his younger siblings would now have a chance.

Huir no resolverá tu problema".

"Lo he intentado.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown. As the eldest, Drake wears the crown and therefore has the responsibility to care for his siblings. In almost every family, there's always the black sheep that gives everyone a headache. This black sheep is a real piece of work! He sells drugs from his room and his mother patronises him? 😄

Poor Drake. He finds himself at a breaking point after all efforts to make his brother see the light. He must feel like a fish out of water in their midst. I wish the parents would take responsibility and address the issue plaguing the family. A compelling and relatable read on family dynamics and responsibility. Well done! Take care and have a wonderful day. !PIMP

Indeed @kemmyb. A wise and true saying. The oldest child in some cultures has the heaviest burden of the entire family on his shoulders. That's a tremendous pressure to place on one so young even before that person grows to adulthood. Sadly, almost invariable, there is a "black sheep" in the family; one who goes his/her own way without regard to the trauma that may be reaped upon the family.

To be able to step back and gain a different perspective and chart your own course in life is a challenge. It doesn't mean you don't love your family. At some point, you have to do you. If that means distancing yourself for your mental stability, then by all means do so. What's love got to do with it? You can love from afar and away from the entanglements.

Thanks for your visit and thoughtful analysis of my story. I always appreciate it and look forward to seeing your comments. Thanks for your support of my content.

A mother's life is very difficult, she has to take care of everything and keep everyone in the house happy and she herself is very troubled inside. This story is very interesting.

You are correct @djbravo. A troubled family indeed. The oldest son made the decision to leave and chart his own course in life. Too much responsibility placed on his shoulders.

Thanks for your visit and engagement. I appreciate it.
