Bird Life

Birds Visiting Spring October

Living sub-tropical birds thrive between the woodlands, our gardens ever looking for slightest movement between leaves or listen carefully from where they sing.

We never know how fortunate we are in what we got, till they are gone, keep looking no matter how often one sees them excitement mounts trying to photograph them.

Lets get off to a cracking start by simply stepping outside, sometimes looking out the window is sufficient to sneak a peak at their coming and going.

White-bellied Sunbirds singing a delightful tune, all year round breeding, more abundant during Spring and Summer which is where we are now in the Southern Hemisphere. Relatively wide spread little bird throughout regions where the family Nectariniidae enjoy open woodlands, riparian thickets, bushveld and suburban gardens.

White-eared barbet has a definite call, that is what I love about the birds they always let you know when they close. Only found in South Africa from our town of Amanzimtoti up the coastal belt into Mozambique our neighbours.

IMG_5326.JPG

The cackling presence of the Green Wood-Hoopoe on a couple of occasions this month which has been quite an experience for me to enjoy them running around the tree, ever in search of food on the gnarled trunk.

IMG_5338.JPG

Black-collared barbet family Lybiidae, native to sub-Saharan Africa duetting to another somewhere in the vacinity. The song is partially sung by one then answered by the partner "too-puddly, too-puddly", alternate notes in a well synchronized rendition between the pair.

Brown-hooded Kingfisher my friend who will call me to the window where I work to greet once settled. Not needing to live right on the water, nor eating fish, very happy living in the garden picking up worms or insects especially once the lawns have been cut.

IMG_5601.JPG

Red-billed firefinch sunning late afternoon yesterday, one can be forgiven when confused with African firefinch, here I am relying on the colour of the bill to identify as on occasion, we do get both although the latter is far more shy.

IMG_5610.JPG

Outside the window this morning I heard the call of the Cape wagtail, distinct chatter close by, on looking a House sparrow and wagtail were sharing the area together, what a joy to see nature to close. Wagtail pumping up and down tail with sparrow close by as if they were long lost friends.

Hello dear friend @joanstewart good morning
It's true what you say, we generally don't appreciate what we have, and we only notice them when they are no longer there.
I love your bird publications, you have very beautiful specimens there.
Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful photographs.
Have a wonderful afternoon

If we could ensure that those who administer the country govern for the people of the people, we would live in a wonderful country. Much of the world's problems would be solved with that.
I take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful weekend.

If promises made were upheld it would make life easier. Politicians no long held accountable leads to crisis.

Lots of rain here over the weekend, snow inland in the mountains a lovely break from the early heat we started to feel. !LUV

Lol, it must be fun to listen to the melody of the birds, and observe the go on about their life with your camera in handy.

Great shots, always enjoy your bird photographs.

You learn the calls then look to find the visitors, have heard the call of Africa (African Fish Eagle) high above a couple of times this week, simply out of range to capture any pics.

Two birds I miss - that are I always associate with my childhood on the South Coast - the kingfisher and the fish eagle. Such beautiful birds. As for those barbets. I haven't seen them in forever either. What a delightful feathered selection

Fish eagles have been out and about, simply to high to capture photography, riding thermals with all the changes in weather.

So many medium to small birds in and out daily, it is one place I always being is outdoors watching their antics.

That's a great collection. I am well blessed for birds in our Thai garden but that Wood-Hoopoe of yours does give me bird-envy!

A pleasure sharing some of our feathered friends, the wood-hoopoe is a character I have delighted in seeing visit the year.

Life is thriving around you. I found how Black-collared barbet sounds on eBirds and then continue with the White-eared barbet, never heard anything like that. 🙂
It is so nice to have all these birds as neighbours.

Both barbets excavate holes into tree trucks to nest, their calls to each other very distinctive.

Having variety outdoors keeps you busy on each walk.
