Hello #Hive friends! Welcome to another edition of my black and white street photography series "Stolen Stories". This is also my entry for today's #monomad challenge and it's a single story about "Amparo" a woman who often walks the streets of the village but who I hadn't been able to photograph until now.

¡Hola amigos de #Hive! Bienvenidos a otra edición de mi serie de fotografía callejera en blanco y negro "Historias Robadas". Esta es también mi entrada para el reto #monomad de hoy y se trata de una sola historia sobre "Amparo" una mujer que suele ir por lasa calles del pueblo pero a la cual no había podido fotografiar hasta ahora.

AMPARO

Walking along Carabobo Avenue, the street where the sarcophagi are taken from the church to the cemetery, the street we call here: "La calle de los difuntos" (the street of the dead); I see Amparo in the distance. It seems to me that she is knocking on the door of the old colonial house of the Ecarri family, still inhabited by the descendants of those who built it more than a century ago.

Yendo por la Avenida Carabobo, la calle por donde llevan los sarcófagos desde la iglesia al cementerio, la calle que aquí llamamos: "La calle de los difuntos"; veo a Amparo a lo lejos. Me parece que está llamando a la puerta de la vieja casona colonial de la Familia Ecarri, habitada aún por los descendientes de aquellos que las construyeron hace más de un siglo.

No one seems to answer his knock on the door of the old house. Amparo usually walks through the streets with her backpack slung over her shoulder. She asks for gifts of food, medicine, clothes or anything that will help her to survive. Amparo suffers from an illness which has affected her speech and motor skills, but this does not prevent her from going out on the streets every day to look for her livelihood.

Parece que nadie responde a su llamado a la puerta de la vieja casa. Amparo acostumbra a ir por las calles con su mochila colgada al hombro. Ella pide que le regalen comida, medicinas, ropas o cualquier cosa que le sirva para sobrevivir. Amparo sufre un enfermedad la cual le ha afectado el habla y su capacidad motriz, pero esto no le impide salir a diario a las calle para buscar su sustento.

In the mid-1980s, I was friends with Amparo's eldest son "Cheo". I used to go and play with him then, and Amparo was a strong young woman, very busy taking care of her house. She worked cooking for farm workers in the nearby fields. At that time she was in very good health.... As Cheo told me, his father never took care of them and disappeared from the village one day without a trace, so he and his mother had to fend for themselves.

A mediados de los años 80, yo era amigo de "Cheo" el hijo mayor de Amparo. Entonces yo solía ir a jugar con él y Amparo era una mujer joven, fuerte y muy ocupada del cuidado de su casa. Ella trabajaba cocinando para trabajadores de las granjas en los campos cercanos. En esos tiempo su salud era muy buena... Según me contaba Cheo, su padre nunca se ocupó de ellos y desapareció del pueblo un día sin dejar rastro, entonces él y su madre tuvieron que salir adelante solos.

All kinds of stories circulate here about Amparo. Some say she has lost her memory, others say she can be a bit aggressive because of her illness. The truth is that for some time now I have been greeting her and she only responds with a slight gesture, nothing more. I had assumed that the years without seeing me might have made her forget me, as I was almost a child when I frequented her house on the outskirts of the village. I also heard that "Cheo", her son, had emigrated from the country more than a decade ago and is apparently in prison. Very unfortunate, especially for Amparo, I suppose.

Aquí circulan toda clase de historias acerca de Amparo. Algunos dicen que perdió su memoria, otros dicen que puede ponerse un poco agresiva debido a su enfermedad. Lo cierto es que desde hace algún tiempo la he saludado y solo me responde con un leve gesto, nada más. Yo me había supuesto que los años sin verme quizás la hayan hecho olvidarse de mi, pues yo era casi un niño cuando frecuentaba su casa a las afueras del pueblo. También he oído que "Cheo" su hijo, había emigrado del país hace más de una década y al parecer está en prisión. Algo muy lamentable, en especial para Amparo, supongo.

Amparo stopped and began to look towards the street. She seemed to be trying to remember something, even mumbling a little, looking off into the distance.

Amparo se detuvo y comenzó a mirar hacia la calle. Ella parecía estar intentando recordar algo, incluso murmuraba un poco miraba a la distancia.

I was taking these photos trying not to disturb Amparo. In fact, when she stopped in the street as if gave me a sidelong glance, I walked past her, barely waving, although she didn't answer. A few metres further on, I sat on the edge of the street under the shade of a tree overhanging the wall on the corner. From there I took some frontal shots of Amparo coming towards me. I innocently assumed that she was paying attention to me, but she was not.

Estuve haciendo estas fotos procurando no molestar a Amparo. De hecho, cuando ella se detuvo en la calle como mirándome de reojo, yo pasé de largo apenas saludándole aunque ella no contestó. Unos pocos metro más adelante, me senté al margen de la calle bajo la sombra de un árbol que sobresalía por encima de la pared en la esquina. Desde allí hice algunas fotos frontales de Amparo viniendo hacia mí. Yo, inocentemente, suponía que ella estaba haciendo caso de mi, pero no fue así.

Suddenly Amparo started to speak in a loud voice and headed straight towards me... I didn't really understand what she was saying, but the truth is that my photographic instinct overcame my surprise and so I continued taking photos despite the difficulty I had with the shadow cast by the branches of the tree under which I was sitting.

Repentinamente Amparo comenzó a hablar en voz alta y enfiló directamente hacia donde estaba yo... Yo en realidad no entendía que cosa estaba ella diciendo, pero lo cierto es que mi instinto fotográfico pudo más que mi sorpresa y entonces continué haciendo fotos a pesar de lo complicado que lo tenía con la sombra proyectada por las ramas del arbol bajo el cual estaba sentado.

While she was talking non-stop, Amparo sat right next to me. Then I could better understand some of the phrases she was saying. She said that I was "Jesus" her son's childhood friend "Cheo" and she also named my mother and my father... Then she began to reminisce about some of the times I ate at her house as a child after long times flying kites in the streets with her son.

Mientras hablaba sin parar, Amparo se sentó justo a mi lado. Entonces pude entender mejor algunas de las frases que estaba diciendo. Ella dijo que yo era "Jesús" el amigo de la infancia de su hijo "Cheo" y también nombro a mi madre y a mi padre... Luego comenzó a rememorar algunas de las veces que yo comí en su casa siendo un niño después de largas ratos volando papagayos en las calles con su hijo.

I am obsessed with taking photographs and I must confess that I kept pressing the shutter while Amparo seemed to be looking at scenes of everything she remembered and of which I was a part.

Yo soy un obseso de hacer fotografías y debo confesar que seguí apretando el disparador mientras Amparo parecía estar mirando escenas de todo aquello que ella recordaba y de lo cual yo formaba parte.

But when Amparo turned her face towards me, I couldn't take any more pictures... I simply put my camera in my backpack and listened to Amparo. She seemed to remember things that even I had forgotten, like the time when her son and I went out to play with a ball in the street and almost got hit by a car because of our recklessness. That time Amparo made us come into the house and gave us an overwhelming scolding... That was nearly 40 years ago now, but Amparo seems to remember it perfectly.

Pero cuando Amparo giró su rostro hacia mi, no pude seguir haciendo más fotos... Simplemente guardé mi cámara en mi mochila y me dediqué a escuchar a Amparo. Ella parecía recordar cosas las cuales incluso yo había olvidado, como aquella ocasión en la que su hijo y yo salimos a jugar con una pelota en plena calle y estuvimos a punto de ser atropellados por un auto debido a nuestra imprudencia. Aquella vez Amparo nos hizo entrar a la casa y nos dio un regaño abrumador... De eso hace cerca de 40 años ya, sin embargo Amparo parece recordarlo perfectamente.

This is how I somehow "reconnected" with that "Amparo" who was part of my childhood and whom I had somehow lost.

Así fue como me "reencontré de alguna manera con aquella "Amparo" que fue parte de mi niñez y a quien de alguna manera le había perdido.
