Simple food: healthy food

I grow up in one of an indigent family in our place. Life teach us to be humble, to live simply, to live within our means, to be simple in all things and even to eat very simple yet nutritious food.

Being a Filipino, we should eat rice three times a day but in our family we experienced eating root crops usually for dinner and we usually eat rice once a day.

Being a child, seeing my classmates, our friends and neighbors eating rice three times a day made me feel that we are so poor. But also I am grateful to God and to our parents because even we are not eating rice but we didn't feel hungry, we always have something to eat.

Growing having a very simple lifestyle because that's the only what we can afford, it made me strong despite of that circumstances. It made me realize that we are still blessed because we didn't go to sleep hungry.

Now that I grown up and have my own family, I can't say that we are rich nor we are poor but we are blessed. Blessed to have good health, blessed to have hut as our shelter, blessed to have clothes, blessed to have slippers and above all blessed to have food on our table.

Since I grow up having simple food, I also serve simple food for my family.

We don't have refrigerator, we cannot buy or store many vegetables, so there were days or time that literally I don't have something to cook. But looking to our garden, then, I have something to cook.

Here are two simple recipes I made using what I can find from the garden:

Moringa soup

Having moringa in our garden is so helpful especially during moments that I don't have something to cook.

Moringa is a powerful plant because it contains a lot of vitamins good for our health.

I will just pick some moringa leaves, spring onions and lemon grass from the garden and add a little ginger and instantly I have a fresh, delicious and nutritious soup.

Just boil a water, add some salt to taste, add the ginger and lemon grass and lastly your moringa leaves. Let it boil and remove from fire. Don't overcook or else the moringa will have a different taste.

Serve it while it hot. The soup is sweet knowing that you have a fresh ingredients from the garden.

Taro and sweet potato leaves

I have one piece of taro I bought from the market, I slice them into small pieces. I get sweet potato leaves from the garden as well as spring onions. Its okay for me not to use onions because I have a lot of spring onions in the garden. I also get one stalk of lemon grass from the garden to have a great smell on what I am cooking. I added a little ginger and that's it, I can cook a simple yet nutritious food.

Just boil the water with salt, ginger and lemon grass then add the taro. When the taro is tender, you can then add the sweet potato leaves. Don't overcook for a better result.

After cooking, we suppose to eat so the leaves are not overcooked but my husband is doing something and need to finish it that time, our dinner was delayed and resulted for an overcook leaves, lol.

Simple food are usually a healthy and nutritious food. It is easy to prepare and some can be found straight from the garden.

You are eating extremely healthy. Moringa is very nutritious- having vitamin, mineral and protein. Sweet potato leaves is also very nutritious. I have never tried these soups but I will one day. Great that you can get the leaves from your garden.

I'm new to the second soup but the first, my dad makes it sometimes as it's medicinal. It's a beautiful thing having to grow your own food in your garden as there may be day where you don't have the funds to go to the market or prolly you don't even feel like going to the market but the nutritious plants in the garden comes in handy and everyone has what to eat. Lovely writing dear. Thanks for elaborating on how to make the soups.

Yes you're right on that. Plants in the garden is an easy way to have something to cook when we have nothing and we felt not to go in the market.

Thanks for the visit.

Looks so healthy! I thought it Will be great you can eat rice just one. Me and my husband still struggle of it.
For me, I can reach my goals to not eat rice at all because I'm in weight loss program now. But for my husband, he can eat with rice just for 2 Times 😅

For the dinner, yeap dinner dishes would be healthy option, and you put taro. You can replace with potato or sweet potato as well 🙂

I am glad you have a garden you can always fetch from and that's one of the beauties of owning a garden.

I know moringa to be very medicinal and you it helps in combating different illness. I haven't had the soup before but I can bet that it tastes really nice.

I could also smell the nutritious food your prepares Miss Jen, the spring onions, the lemon and grass and the ginger.☺️

Your kids are blessed to have a mother who is resourceful in finding food and also a good cook who serves nutritious and healthy food to her children.🥰

😂 To be honest, I never understand why people around me and generally in SEA people eat rice three times/day. I guess I didn't really grew up eating rice that much but my parents do. I don't think it's healthy eating rice excessively as well, so what you're doing with your food is the same way I do. Eat healthier when I am at home. I usually take moringa capsules and never really know until this point they can be turned into delicious meal 😊

Oh you're taking moringa capsules? Moringa capsules is also available here but I never tried to buy or make one because I can consume moringa everyday if I want.

I remember in our previous boarding house, I planted more than 10 moringa trees. Everyday I can cook but it never runs out. Even our neighbor can benefit what I planted.

Here I have one moringa tree for now.

Filipinos are really into rice and it seems not eating it three times a day is something incomplete hehehe. But to those people who are in diet is just eating it twice a day.
