Pygmy Owl in a viburnum bush | PhotoFeed Contest - Wildlife Photography Round 71

avatar

This pygmy owl flew into the garden at the beginning of September. Perhaps he was hunting for small birds, perhaps he himself was fleeing from a larger predator. But the bird flew into a viburnum bush and sat on a branch for a long time.

The Pygmy Owl is the smallest member of the owl family that lives in Siberia. In summer it mainly feeds on small rodents, in winter it often hunts small birds such as sparrows, tits, bullfinches.
Unlike larger owls, the Pygmy Owl is very curious and is not afraid of people or domestic animals. In winter, the Pygmy Owl often hunts sparrows and tits near bird feeders.
Pygmy Owls usually nest in tree hollows, and they are not very concerned about camouflaging their homes; at the foot of the tree where the sparrow owl nests there is always a lot of food leftovers.
Thanks to the pygmy owl's almost complete lack of caution, I was able to photograph the bird quite well and many times.
