THE RACE HISTORY

The Mille Miglia is one of the most famous and iconic motor races in the world.
It was born in Italy in 1927, and stands out for its history, its beauty and its fascinating combination of speed, competition and spectacular landscapes.
Over the years, the Mille Miglia has earned a special place in the hearts of classic car enthusiasts and racing enthusiasts.
The history of the Mille Miglia dates back to the 1920s, when Italy was in full motoring fervour. The Italian pilot Renzo Castagneto had the idea of organizing a thousand-mile race (hence the name "Mille Miglia") that would cross Italy from Brescia to Rome and back. The first edition of the race took place in 1927, and the route included the crossing of various Italian cities and towns, guaranteeing a spectacular display of the participating cars to the public along the roads.

The evolution of the Race

The Mille Miglia quickly became one of the most important motor races in the world, attracting famous drivers and prestigious car brands. The event was held annually until 1957, when it was interrupted due to a tragic accident in which the Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago lost his life, along with several spectators. However, in 1977 the Mille Miglia was reinstated as a regularity race for vintage cars, keeping the spirit of the original race alive.
Today, the Mille Miglia is an event of great international appeal, attracting car enthusiasts and spectators from all over the world. The ride takes place on an atmospheric route, passing through beautiful Italian cities, picturesque villages, majestic mountains and scenic roads. The beauty of the Italian landscapes, combined with the charm of the vintage cars participating in the race, make the Mille Miglia a unique event of its kind.

REQUIREMENTS

Participating in the Mille Miglia requires a classic car manufactured by 1957, the year the original race was discontinued. Eligible cars include iconic models such as Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Auto Bianchi, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche and many more. The competition is open to a limited number of participants, selected through a rigorous application process. Requirements include full documentation of the car, proof of its historicity and a technical inspection to ensure it is fit for competition. Today the Race is focused on Timing Regularity and not on speed which makes the game more complex and exciting, much less dangerous and allows riders to carve out moments to enjoy each stage of the route. This is the main reason that makes this race a global attraction and attracts drivers and enthusiasts from far and wide to attend.
The crews must strictly respect the pre-established times to cover each section of the race, through checkpoints and specific stages a lot of training is required and a deep knowledge of the vehicles that are often difficult to drive, but this certainly does not limit the enthusiasm of the participants who they love to compete because they have the opportunity to cross some of the most beautiful routes in Italy.
Furthermore, safety is a top priority and stringent measures are in place to ensure the safety of participants and the public along the way.

Along the way, the public can attend shows, exhibitions and other events related to motoring and Italian culture.
There are major local and global sponsors, such as Borsalino and Chopard and also important associations such as the Brescian Industrial Association, many of which have been actively promoting and participating in the Race for almost a century!
