Hello Hivers and Bibliophiles all around the block!

This time we’re doing something different. It’s a fun contest to promote reading comprehension and language learning as well as literary appreciation. We know that we have very diverse readers who speak multiple languages and We're excited to encourage you to expand your linguistic horizons.

After all, reading isn’t just about reading but also understanding the words that weave a story together. While English serves as the lingua franca in our community , we invite you to embrace the opportunity to enhance your language skills and explore the world of storytelling from a newer perspective.

For this contest, we are featuring @litguru who is known to write creative fiction and art on hive. This time his work titled The Technologies of God features complex words and is quite descriptive. You can learn so much from reading his work. If you're an ESL (English as Second Language) reader, @litguru works provide a story that will undoubtedly enhance and enrich your vocabulary. Make sure to check his works even once this contest ends!

You can find the story that you will need below!

As usual, to keep the contest organized, we will have some simple rules listed here:

  • Choose 10 of the most difficult English vocabulary according to you in the story
  • For each selected vocabulary word, translate it in your native language. If there’s no translation for it, then it’s called “Untranslatability” and please mention that there’s no equivalent of it in your language.
  • You can use a dictionary and don’t forget to attach the link.
  • Use the word that you choose and create a short story based on it.
  • The minimum is 250 words and not translated.
  • Include tag #lostintranslation and #hivebookclub in your post.

Prizes

The first winner will get 10 hive

The second winner will get 5 Hive

The third winner 2.5 Hive

Good luck!

For anyone that does not use peakd and use other interface such as Ecency or Hive, the contest will start from 29th September to 13th October

Hive Book Club is a community made by book lovers, for book lovers. A place where the chaotic minds of writers may punch away words from their keyboards as they share their writing adventures. Where the passionate book collectors may rummage through their stacks of books to share and review their latest additions. Outside of our regular curation process, we may create contests for our community to participate in, and earn even more from their posts. If you have a certain theme for a future contest you would like to see, let us know! Be sure to check with us frequently in our various social media platforms to avoid missing out!

We also have a Discord server! Be sure to join it to stay up-to-date with the latest events, and communicate with our community! Hive Book Club Server

My native language is English. May I 'borrow' one of the languages I learned as a non-native speaker? My two languages are Spanish and German. It would be fun to translate ten words from @litguru's story into one of my learned languages. I read @litguru regularly...he is one of kind. Certainly a wordsmith and amazingly creative. If I have time it would be fun to follow the rules of this contest.

Okay. This is a wonderful contest and I have a few questions. First, English is my native language so I'm not sure how I'll be able to translate it.
And then, are we to use one word from the ten chosen words to write the story?

If your first language is English, you can pick the words and translate them to language that you're learning if any.

And then, are we to use one word from the ten chosen words to write the story?

yes. But if English is your first language, you can still write the story in English.

Hello Hive Book Club. I've met the challenge, I hope. Since English is my native language, it doesn't feel right that I engage in the contest. However, the exercise is brilliant so I went ahead with satisfying the requirments and had great fun writing a story (which was partly inspired by @litguru's). I think this challange was a great idea. It made me think on several levels, and it was a lot of fun.

Thanks for your flexibility in accepting an English speaker in you 'foreign language' exercise. To all of us, languages are foreign if we didn't hear them in our homes, aren't they?

I tried to follow all the rules. Here's the blog (with story):

An Exercise in Translation, and a Story, for the Hive Book Club

Thanks for the invitation to participate.

Greetings literature-loving friends.

Today I leave you my entry.

I found this exercise very interesting. My mother tongue is Spanish and I am happy that nowadays we have so many tools to enjoy literature in several languages. I invite you to participate @tere.alv and @annafenix
