Holiday in France

Last week I was on holiday in France with the family. We always like to do some city trips during our holidays. Since we were in the Jura region we decided to visit the city of Dijon.

Wine or beer?

The French wines are world famous. The French produce, export and drink a lot of wine. But what I didn't know is that they also produce quite some good beers as well. In the bigger supermarkets and also the smaller liquor shops sell quite a lot of Bière Artesnale.
As I do in every city or town which I visit I always look for beers that are produced in that region.

When we visited Dijon and my ladies shopsping I found a shop with local products. This means mustard, honey, wine and ..... beers.

I was really surprised by the collection of beers they had. Most of them come from the region of Dijon.

I could have bought way more, but since we had just arrived and I had to carry the beers in my backpack I limited it to the following three beers; an India Pale Ale, a blonde and a pale ale.
I will be reviewing all the beers later on in this post.

As you might remember from my previous #beersaturday posts I collect bottle caps.
And these beers all have very cool ones.
I have collected over 250 unique ones in the past years. The first 238 are in a photo frame, but I am working on filling a second photo frame.

De La Choue Blonde

De La Choue Blonde is a beer from brasserie de Vauclair. The brewery is located in Giey-sur-Aujon which is an hour north of Dijon.
La choue translates as the cabbage, but that doesn't make sense since it has an owl on the label.
It probably has to do with the famous owl on the cathedral in Dijon (see the aforementioned post).

The beer style is Bière de Garde Farmhouse, which has its origin in France.
Farmhouse beer are traditional summer beers that were made in the winter and drunk throughout crop planting and harvest.
The beer has won a bronze medal in the Concours Général Agricole in Paris in 2022, but since I don't know this contest I should just try the beer myself.

After pooring the beer it has a lotnof foam but that disappears quite quickly.
It smells and tastes a bit hoppy and the beer has a bit of bitterness in the aftertaste. I'm not uses to that with the Belgian blondes, but since I also like the slightly bitter IPA's I appreciate it in this beer too.
It's not the best beer I had, but it wasn't a bad one.
I'll rate it 2.5 out of 5.

Elixkir IPA

Elixkir is made by Brasserie Elixkir Quetigny; a small town that is part of the arrondissement of Dijon.
The name Elixkir is a merge of Félix Kir which was a former priest, war hero and mayor of Dijon and elixer; a potion to which certain magical or medicinal properties are usually attributed.
The subtile on the label "IBU Profane IPA" might refer to Ibuprofen which is an anti-inflammatory drug. That may explain the picture of the nurse holding the beer and the hops on the label.
I really like creative names and labels on beers. All their beers have labels that have a person or an animal on them.

As you can see in the image a nice layer of foam was created when pooring the beer in the glass. I always like my beers with a layer of foam. The beer tates hoppy and a bit fruity.
The percentage of alcohol is with 7% slightly higher than other IPA's.
Its quite a good IPA and I will give it a 3.5 out of 5 rating.

Brasserie des Ducs Pale Ale

Brasserie des Ducs is located in Lonchamps, about 30 minutes east of Dijon.
The brewery has five standard beers; Blanche, Blonde, Rousse, Pale Ale and India Pale Ale.
A Pale Ale is less pronounced than the India Pale Ale. An IPA is usually a bit heavier, more hoppy and stronger in taste.

I was immediately attracted by the label of this beer. The hat, the moustache and the hop beard look really funny. It refers to the Dukes of Burgundy that lived in Dijon during the middle ages (14th and 15th century). In the center of the city is the beautiful Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy (see my other post for more info).

When pooring the beer into a glass it formed a lot of foam that lasted for a while. The beer smells fruity and a bit hoppy.
The taste however is more hoppy than fruity, but not too much for me.
I'll give it a 3 out of 5 rating.

These were the three beers I have bought in Dijon. My ratings might seem a bit low, but I hardly give a 4 or 5 star rating. A 3 star or higher rating for me means I would definitely drink it again when I have the chance.
From these three I like the Elixkir IPA the most.
