Ways To Manage Frustration

Daily people set out with goals they hope to achieve, sometimes they try and try and it seems as if all their efforts are yielding no result and this could lead one to being frustrated, and directly leads to aggressiveness- as defined by John Dollard in his theory of frustration -aggressiveness. Therefore frustration can be defined as ;

the feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve something.

There are several causes of frustration. It could be an internal pressure, environmental factors, stress, multiple failures, etc. And all these could ruin not just the peaceful day but affects our interactions with people and our environment. The better we're able to manage the things that cause this frustration, the better we will deal with frustration itself. Frustration if not managed leads to aggression, and that is why it's important to develop ways to manage this frustration to avoid an outpour of anger.

Managing Frustration

To effectively manage frustration, it's important to first understand what the cause of the frustration is. Having knowledge of the cause, helps an individual to know how best to tackle it. Some frustrations are caused by failure, some by pressure from the workplace, some as a result of stagnation, some because of a bad day, etc. Sometimes the way to manage one frustration may differ from another, If someone suffers frustration as a result of stress in workplace, such an individual would need to have some rest to restore composure, a different solution would be needed for someone who has suffered multiple failures, probably a motivational talk with examples of those who suffered worse would do. Below are ways to manage frustrations;

Maintain calm: Staying calm, taking a deep breath and reassuring yourself that everything will be fine is one good way to manage frustration. We are often faced with one challenge or the other and we need constant reassurance that everything will be fine to stay cool. Trying to act on everything may not be the best solution for someone who's stressed or pressured from the workplace or by a peer group. Staying calm helps one think and it's through this thinking that one gains strength to remain cool.

Talk to someone: Most often, talking to someone helps us not only find a solution to what is making us frustrated but brings relief. You can talk to a friend, a counselor, a guardian , or parents about what bothers you. This can go a long way in helping an individual find a solution to such a problem.

Recreational activities: Going out for a walk, hanging out with friends, doing whatever makes us happy when we feel frustrated could relieve us of the pressure and sometimes forget all that which makes us frustrated. Recreational activities could go a long way to help one manage frustration if not for a long time, it would for a few hours or days until we get ourselves together.

What not to do in Frustration

One mistake people make is trying to respond to issues that make them feel frustrated. They believe venting out their anger/frustration could help them feel better, but no, it only makes it worse. People who are frustrated most often tend to be aggressive in response to the pressure within. Whenever you're frustrated, do not act quickly, do not allow the cause of it to overshadow your thoughts, and do not stay alone except if staying away helps you recover from it.
