Mbakwe's Lament

It was a fateful Tuesday morning on1st April 1970, 5 years after April Fool was recognized . Nbakwe had finished tapping his palm wine just before the scorching sun came down on him. He whistled with his mouth as he walked back home, happy with the taste of the freshly tapped wine. He couldn't wait to get home to show his wife the charm of his hunting and also taste the sweetness of his fresh wine. 'What a lucky day' he thought, hastening his steps to get home so he would have his wife prepare a precious delicacy. He was almost reaching his house when he came across Mbaka, one of the elders in the palace. Among other elders, Mbaka was the only one who had accepted the white man's education and was a well learned man.
"GoodMorning my Friend, the gods must have done you a huge favor today, seeing you have a big antelope for a catch"
"Indeed, eagerly I hasten home to show my wife how lucky I am" Mbakwe replied.
"That reminds me, the position you seek in the palace, the king had told me to tell you to bring an antelope and a palm wine in exchange for such a desired title " Mbaka told him.

Mbakwe pondered deeply, he needed that position to be considered a man of honor in his hometown, but then, he knew what a pleasant night it would be with his wife if he presented such meat for the evening. He was still on the thought when Mbaka cleared his throat, breaking him up from his thought.
"An honor will remain, but a meal is just for a night" Mbaka said, as if he could listen to his thoughts.
"Lets go, so I'll take the game to the king and the palm wine as he had requested "
"There's no need my friend, I'll present the bush meat and the wine, the king will summon you when the sun goes down"

Mbakwe handed the bush meat and palm wine to Mbaka and they bid farewell. Mbakwe's patience Ran out as he gradually watched the sun set without a call from the king. He was about to leave for Mbaka's house when Madu, Mbakwe came,
"Mbaka must have had a lucky hunt today. I had called his house before coming here and the aroma of their meal was different. In their pot were smiling fats of antelope " Madu said,
"Antelope?" Mbakwe asked.
"Yes" quickly Mbakwe hurried to Mbaka's house.

"What's the date today?" Mbaka asked after he was confronted by Mbakwe.
"How does the date answer my question?" He retorted.
"Just in case you've forgotten, it's April 1st. A day to stay guard or you're deceived. I successfully pranked yo......u"
Just before he finished his statement Mbakwe had pounced on him. "You're a thief" he kept screaming. For this singular act, the people of Daji became so conscious of 1st April, nothing that was told to them on that day of April was considered truthful. "Mbaka had brought misery upon us that we no longer trust a day to hold the truth" the people lamented.

😂😂😂😂
Mbaka successfully achieved a large antelope and palm wine. He dined and wined with his family while Nbakwe waited hopelessly for the position in the palace, I am pretty sure, I'd kill Mbaka if it were up to me, because the hurt of not seeing my wife's happy and appreciative face would haunt me forever 😆😆😆

Hahahaha, why kill instead of to try hunting again. 😂. Mbaka must have seen how fat the antelope is and since he was a learned man, he had the date in his heart

Being a learned man really served him.

If it was that easy to catch a big antelope, it wouldn't have felt special to Nbakwe so much that he was torn between pleasing his wife and the King as he aimed for the position.

That's true, it was even his first big catch and that really hurt

Honour or a nice dinner and a happy wife? Mkakwe made his decision but he might have been too gullible. Why throw punches to the thief, Mbaka when the animal is already in the pot? :-) Mbakwe learnt his lesson and a new village custom was started. Now everyone will be on guard - especially on April 1st.

It's unfortunate that he missed both the honour and a nice diner. The thought that he missed the both must have been hurtful, and fighting was what he could think of

😄 mbaka played a really expensive joke on Mbakwe. I wonder what Mbakwe's wife would've said after hearing his story
