Over 80 Cases of Alleged Sexual Abuse: Dozens of World Health Organization Employees Implicated

The WHO previously responded to the Ebola outbreak in Congo and now a panel with the organization has identified dozens of cases of alleged sexual abuse from the region and there are at least 20 WHO staff who have been implicated.

So far the head of the WHO has called the findings a betrayal of the people that they intend to serve and it certainly deteriorates the brand they've tried to establish. It's alleged that senior WHO management had been informed of multiple abuse claims but failed to stop the issue and it is also alleged that the organization might have even promoted one of those managers since the allegations of abuse had been made.

This has been referred to as the most wide-scale sexual abuse incident linked to a UN institution in years.

Why are so many alleged to have engaged in wrongdoing? The organization claims to be committed to following up on trying to prevent these abuses in the future.

If they are truly sorry for the suffering and any alleged abuse that had been overlooked then they need to do better. Based on the alleged findings it looks like, if there are that many abusers among the ranks, that they need to get better screening procedures in place and find out why so many mistakes were made in wrongfully determining that those individuals were suited for the position of working with the WHO. If you cannot respond to a crisis without dozens of workers engaging in sexual abuse in the meantime then maybe you should just stay home and find another way to help that doesn't increase abuse and make life worse for people in the region.
