Reorganizational Success

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about improving our living situation and how it just takes a little rethinking!

Reorganizational Success

There is one thing that's for sure for us in our house: we've outgrown the space! The additional challenge for us in that regard is that we cannot find a house that we can afford. What do we do in the meantime?! Do a little bit of reorganizing to make improvements in what little ways we can!

My wife and I have a pretty serious and thankfully shared idea of what we are going to be looking for in a house. Yes we want some of the nice things in a house, while I have some other additions like a garage 100% but one of the most important things for us is that the house needs to be affordable! We see so many people these days that are house rich but money poor, meaning that they bought this gigantic fucking house but paid so much money to get said house that they have absolutely nothing in the bank and are living paycheck to paycheck, even if they make a pretty decent wage per year. That is absolutely not something that we are going to get ourselves in!

With that in mind, we knew that the space that we have, although it is realistically decent it is not enough for our family and the various needs that we have. We have a son who enjoys quite a few things in life like fishing, trucks and other things that generally take up a decent amount of space, in addition to the other normal things that we have in our home like the rest of the stuff that we own. The space is getting tight! If we had a garage where we live, the pressure would be off immensely but sadly, we didn't luck out and we don't have a garage. We also refuse to pay for a storage unit because that ends up becoming a huge hassle and you end up forgetting you have some things, buy more shit you don't need and fill the house back up again. All things that we don't need LOL.

So we did a little bit of reorganizing! We have been downsizing and purging things for about a year now, because we thought we would be moving to another state but a natural disaster came in and said fuck you to your plans. It was for the best anyway, because we dodged a bullet. We were going to invest in a house that was technically affordable however we would have spent more money on it than we were originally planning. No bueno!

One of the nice things about trying to do some reorganizing is that you are able to find things that you didn't remember you had which you like or liked and will reuse again, and it also shows you things that are just a fucking pile of junk and you toss it. We went through quite a bit of purging! We unpacked and threw away 5 boxes of stuff that we collected over the years for one reason or another. These weren't gigantic nor were they completely full boxes but it was definitely just a lot of things that we no longer needed to keep and also some things we forgot we had but really didn't need any longer.

Boy did it do wonders for our home! We were able to reorganize two of our main rooms to shift things around and now we feel like we are getting back to feeling like normal people again, whereas before we felt like a couple college students with a kid. Shit in boxes everywhere, things largely unorganized and just a general uneasy feeling when you walk in the house and know that what greets you is a fair serving of chaos haha. I got used to it but my wife never did! She was very annoyed about the situation and I guess that's the best motivator of change.

The added benefit is that we were able to get our son into his own room with a much more normal kid bed. The benefits have paid off in spades and we're really excited about it. We have another room back and even have a chance to sit down at night while he's sleeping in an actual bedroom and we can not even do fun adult things, but just wash the dishes after he goes to bed, do some laundry, clean up a little bit after the cyclone that occurs having a kid. Things that our parents always did because we had designated rooms to get kicked off into lol.

I think there are a number of physical and mental benefits to this change and we are definitely enjoying it! We both said that we should have done this sooner but that's the thing with making personal changes, sometimes we push the off because we have other things going on but it's important to take steps to just make basic improvements where we can, it will pay off considerably in the long run!

It's never easy to settle in a house, especially with the hassle of moving and also having to unpack to have a decent approachable house. It's great to see you've been doing loads of unpacking and settling in.
I'd rather have a house where I can also pay minimally for while having more money to take care of things, instead of choosing expensive house and all that.

Yeah that's for sure, we need to live within our means and budget. Too many people go 150% with that shit and now the economy is fucked because of it, among other factors.

That’s great… one gets creative when one needs to.
What about building a cob building, garage or even a house. It costs (almost) nothing… just sand, clay and straw… added some water.

We don’t like the idea of buying a huge house and having a mortgage for many years to come.
Our next plan is finding the right plot of land and building our own house with natural materials… like sand, clay and straw. We will have a house in the end and no mortgage. It is so important to enjoy life. Why pay a bank just to have a roof…
Have a great new week 👋🏻😊

That's great, my wife wouldn't go for something like that hahaha she is too used to the living we have now which isn't that uncommon here. Central air, decent size. I would love to buy 20 acres on the side of a mountain in New Hampshire and build something there lol it's too rural for her though sadly hahaha. Finding a middle ground is a little tricky!

It feels good to reorganize what we have right now and rediscover space! We've made some good improvements doing that!

Thanks 😊 hubby likes the idea luckily and we visited examples.

I can imagine.
It needs two to believe in it to really work. Some can’t live to rural. Some can. I wouldn’t mind at all.
Finding the middle ground can be difficult. I know. Good luck with it.

Sounds awesome so far. It’s good to reorganise. Now you can enjoy the space created! Hope it works for a while.
Have a lovely new week 👋🏻

Good for you! Downsizing is not the easiest thing to do. It's soooo easy to collect things and see them pile up. It's amazing how difficult it is to actually remove those things. Good on ya,

Thanks dude, yeah we collected a lot of shit lol and I know we are likely going to be collecting more shit again.. I would like to think that we are a little better than some others at collecting it slower? But we are enjoying the reorganization right now!

Cheers mate, double kudos to realizing that being house rich and cash poor is not a good situation.
