When I need something, I call people. But people don't return my calls. I know they have what I need, because they've told me so. The more successful you are, the more hectic your schedule becomes. You may be working 24 hours a day just to keep up with the demands of your position and the projects you've committed to delivering on time. The last thing that you need is to take even a single phone call from some bored marketer who wants to pitch you their new internet affiliate program for pocket knives and hair dryers.

The easy answer is that it's not polite. But that can't be the full story, or we'd all permanently be stuck with only what we need. The real reason is that there are problems with saying things like 'I have a name and a location, but I need to call you' that make it not worth bothering. One of the big issues is security if your identity can be hidden when contacting you, then it's much harder to detect scams and frauds where they pretend to be someone they're not, and try to persuade you to part with your money or other assets.
