Be Nice - Crazy Pen Hallucinating

I spend most of my time answering emails. It takes me a few seconds to compose a reply, but when I click the send button, my words go racing across the globe and may live forever on the Internet.

There's just one problem with our reliance on email. We use it for everything, from the most trivial matters to the most significant. The friendly tone of email often causes us to be too casual, and we forget that what we're really doing is communicating with another human being. As I've said elsewhere, if you want to impress on your reader that you are a human being, one way is to make them aware of the fact that they may not be reading an automated message. That they might actually be in contact with another human being. That is, point out how the response you've received differs from what they'd get if they were interacting with a grumpy old machine. Do this without sounding corny or stupid. After all, if someone's just sent you yet another polished corporate email, pointing out its polish will only earn you eye-rolling and glazed faces.
