The future is female - LOH Contest #171

Ok so I thought I was going to miss this prompt because it's been one hell of a week. Imagine my excitement when I went back to the post and saw that we got till the end of Saturday.

So what does women empowerment mean to me?

Simply put, It is the process of creating an enabling environment where women can be whatever they want to be. It is also the mental revaluation of women that they can be whatever they want to be and they as much also form the intrinsic part of the society. We are not lesser, we are not weaker and we are not inferior because we are unique and as much as productive.

Right from time, women have been known to be nation builders. We have women in the likes of Princess Amina of Zaria going to war and bringing victory home to their people, we have women like Cleopatra of Egypt and Queen Moremi of Ife contributing greatly to the lives of their people in terms of leadership.

Being a woman already put us at a disadvantaged position with conceiving, birthing and nursing a child, its even more difficult when the woman has to do it alone. It's also a lot to take in being classified as a B team even when we are suppose to all form part of the A team. But in all this tribulations, it has not prevented women from excelling.

All over the globe in every culture and history, we see women striving against societal norm that are detrimental to women and they still end up victorious because naturally as a woman we are empowered to strive and succeed we just need the right attitude, motivation and a little push.

My interest in or me caring about women empowerment spun from the environment I am from. I grew up in a society with the existing mentality that the end result of a woman is to get married and have children but I wanted something more.

Whenever I read about women in the likes of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Chimamanda Adiche, Hillary Cliton Kamala Harris etc excelling and doing great things, I tell myself this can be me because I do not want to restrict my life to just the family unit.

I started thinking how did this women get to where they are? This thought made me to start reading extensively about them and I realized one thing they all had in common is EDUCATION. A further thought about it made sense because when you become educated not just literate, your mind gets programmed to the point where all what you think about is value and when you think about creating value you can never see yourself as less and then the more educated you get, the more opportunities are there to being independent and being independent gives you the opportunity to live life on your own terms because no one can manipulate you into doing their will and neglecting yours. You get to chase your dreams and aspirations head on without fear of disapproval.

Women empowerment started meaning so much to me when I discovered it is quite difficult in my environment to see women at the top of the pyramid because of how much they have shrunk themselves and that's why we have so many loopholes and lapses in our society. For every woman who has limited herself, we have a void created in the society that needs to be filled.

If we can get as much women as possible to believe in themselves and be economically productive, we will have the economy running at optimum speed as there will be a balance at the affairs of authority.

My advice to women is, get EDUCATED, believe in yourself, get involved in life developmental process, support one another because it's team work and not a competition. We will achieve more working together than against each other. You will excel as much as the next woman when you get motivated by her success and not envious.
