WINNING MEDALS: ABILITY IN DISABILITY

(Edited)
Derrick was a fast runner but a handicap. He was loved by everyone in his team at School for his fastness. He has always won first position during interhouse competitions because of his unwavering passion for running. As one of the school's best athlete, he was recommended for an interstate competition and at first he was happy for he was sure if he puts in his best, he would win a medal.

But as the day of the competition approached, he felt very anxious because of his physical disability. He had always ran and competed in the school where the students knew him well. But now he was going for an interstate competition; he thought he would meet people who would ridicule and criticize him for wanting to try despite his condition.

As the day of the competition approached, he watched the other students train very hard. He believed he could do better, but given his disability, he wasnt prepared to face a larger crowd--the social media , television and others would would film the race.

On the day of the race, his school was hesitant to take him along because he didn't train. But he found a way into the bus that took the participants to the stadium. There at the stadium, he saw other participants training and re-training and felt more nervous.

Right about the time for the race, Derrick became filled with excitemennt. Suddenly he was ready to prove that his physical disability wasn't going to determine his capability. His desire to win the medal for the school outweighed how he would appear on TV.

At seeing his one hand, the crowd cheered and commended his courage, although some wished he had stayed back because he might lose his balance. At the sound of the horn, Derrick raced with all his strength. He reached the finish line before other contestants and his schoolmates.

He won the medal. His experience shows there is strength, power and ability in disability.

This post is inspired by one of my students who is a fast runner, winning medals for my school but she is a handicap.

This is my entry into the Tuesday challenge for the freewrite contest by @daily.prompt and @dreemport.

FIVE MINUTES WRITE.

This was supposed to be a five minutes write. I used the egg timer to time myself. Before I could snap it, it changed to some seconds less than five.😅

But at five minutes, this is what I got, haha full of errors too.

At the end, I added more meat to the story. Like I said it's my first time in 5minutes write. I hope I'd do better next time.😅

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate.

Indeed there's ability in disability. The only limitation one has to achieving success is the mind. Once a mind is determined no matter the challenges, it will surely excel.

Beautiful piece

I tried using the egg timer on mobile but it didn't work. How did you do it?

Thanks for your input. We will continue to do our best on anything we have set our heart on, not minding any challenge that comes our way. As for the egg timer, I think it is only to time you.you can't use it to type. Time yourself with it on one phone, while you type on your laptop or on another phone.

The determination that disabled people have when they want to achieve something is massive. Derrick is a clear indication that amidst the disability, we could achieve great goals and reach greater height. This was a lovely read.

I agree with you. Using the handicapped student in my school for example, she is very competitive. She doesn't want her disability to limit her on anything. We are the ones who out of pity mandate that she rests. So you are right that their drive is always massive. Thanks for stopping by

Wow!
He wouldn't have minded racing within the school but since it was an event to be filmed, he felt discouraged.
I'm glad he later made up his mind to participate in the competition not minding his disability. And to the surprise of all, won 🏅 the competition .

Yes he did. He crossed or broke his own protocol and went for the external competitive, just to win the medal for the school. Nneoma, how are you thought? Thanks for stopping by

Truly, there is ability in disability.

If there will be a success there must be the focus and no room for distraction.

There's truly ability in disability and I'm glad about that for him. Glad he got his much needed medal. This was such a lovely read to tell us that Derrick finally got a voice due to his ability. Well-done
