Guinness and Sport for Beer Saturday 🍻

Rugby and Beer

Last week was rugby and beer and it's more of same this week except I swap out the Sierra Nevada for some of my own home brewed Guinness. Now when I say home brewed I don't mean I made it myself! Clearly you can see the cans of Guinness. I mean it was home brewed in my country up in Dublin with fresh water from the river Liffey nearby.

I got The Good wife to pick me up 8 of these when she was at the supermarket this week with Saturday in mind as I knew Arsenal were playing Chelsea at 5:30pm and I knew that South Africa were playing England in the World Cup semi-final in the rugby at 8pm so what better opportunity to have a few pints of Guinness.

These have been keeping cool in the fridge for me since mid week.

The Guinness is a great weekend drink as the weather starts to get a bit cold.

As it happens I was out all day training my son's soccer team and then brought my kids out the country for a walk so I ended up only getting home at about 7 p.m. Arsenal were two nill down to Chelsea, so my son and I were a bit dejected. We must have brought the Gunners luck though as we fought out way back into it and got a 2-2 draw.

I've just sat down now to watch the rugby.

Time to grab a Guinness and try the auld home pour.

A very interesting way of "moving" from a can to a glass :-)

As close to a pub pint as you'll get at home. Tried and tested way to get a good head..

You know just how to get me to click on a post. My favorite drink by a long margin! (Unfortunately the cans are expensive in Japan, and are only 350ml instead of 500. But I buy them anyway.)

No way, didn't know you were a Guinness man. How expensive are the cans/bottles/pints in Japan?

When I was at university, a local bar kept Guinness on tap and had pints for only $2 every Tuesday. They also gave you a free pizza if you ordered two pints. I used to stop in there for lunch between classes for cheap lunch and a buzz. I quickly developed a taste for Guinness and it lept up to the top of my favorites list.

A 350ml can is ¥500 (comes in a ¥2000 4 pack). With the yen falling like crazy, that doesn't convert badly to dollars and euros, but just a year ago that was around $20. To give you an idea, a regular lager is about ¥100. At the bar a pint of Guinness runs ¥1000 by itself, so I rarely drink it in the bar.

Wow that's nuts! Much andall as I like Guinness, if it was 10 times more expensive than beer, it would be a rare treat! In Ireland it's actually around 5-10% cheaper than most beers!
