Fiction: The Strange Fires Of Lagos

When the ball of fire appeared from the skies, it was beautiful and horrifying, like something out of science fiction.

Many had gathered out that night- on the streets, on balconies and patios, wondering what and why it could be. Another plane crashing? Helicopter? But the ball was too rounded and small to pass for an aircraft or its parts, there was no explosion too. They watched as the ball fired down at a meteoric speed, and then, just as it had appeared, it disappeared. Suddenly. Like that, it just popped out.

The streets of Lagos buzzed differently that night, everyone online and offline outdid themselves in bringing out and substantiating their theories. Some said it was a meteor from another outer space, other argued it was another plane crash, a group of nerds on twitter proposed that the ball could be some form of superhero, like superman landing the earth, it was the most ridiculous hypothesis of all, but somehow, the nerds stood by their theory as a fly would stand by a heap of faeces.

While everyone, including religious leaders conjured explanations for the ball of fire, the government remained silent. They were right in doing so, because what would they say? There were no reports of missing aircrafts or industrial accidents there in Lagos and all over the world. The geographic communities too had not seen any rock or object moving towards the earth until the ball of red and green flames entered the earth's atmosphere. So they remained silent, what was there to panic about? The ball in question had even disappeared, no one should crack their heads for too long, moreover, this was Nigeria, it would be another thrilling mystery left unsolved.

But they were wrong; everyone was wrong, there was trouble brewing, because that night, what they all saw as a disappearance was the ball sinking into the lagoon. Minutes later, a dark figure walked out of the waters, dripping, sparks of fire in its eyes.

In days, like every sensational news and event, the mysterious ball of red and green flames fizzled out of the news, Lagosians talked about it less. By the second week, the ball became a thing of the past. Everyone moved on.
On the night that marked the second week of the appearance, a series of events began plaguing the city of Lagos. Fire accidents.

It started from the brothels.

All of a sudden, a brothel would just go up in flames, with no apparent cause.

It first seemed like the usual fire accidents- wiring problems or something, until thirteen brothels at random points across the city burnt. The government had swung in after the third fire, but every investigation failed to conclude on the cause of the fires. Not cigarettes, not electrical issues, they didn't even look like the works of an arsonist. Those kind of fires were known to always start at a point and then spread, the one on their hands didn't spread, instead, a building- all the parts of a building would just burst into flames at once, and burn to the ground, sparing surrounding structures. It was puzzling. Once, a brothel in the middle of two petrol stations had gotten razed with not harm coming to the stations.
The fire always attacked surgically, it was bizarre, but what was even more bizarre was the death patterns.

Almost everyone in the buildings always survived, without a scratch. Two or four or six would end up dying but the rest always came out unscathed. The deaths happened in even numbers, hardly did people die in odds. The dead ones were always found charred together usually in pairs. However, three deaths were recorded one time, two men and a lady, they were all together in a room.

Soon, the events and questions became too much for the mind, why brothels? What was it about brothels? Was someone trying to wipe out brothels? The religions were swift in giving answers to the questions,
"Adultery and fornication are against the ways of God, he is punishing you all! Repent and turn to God, or he will wipe your sinning selves away!"

The media stations began crawling with evangelists.

"Can't you all see it? God is tired of your sinful acts! These are precise supernatural attacks, they don't follow normal understanding. His eyes are watching you!"

"Our Lord is cracking down on all ye sinners, you are all going to die."

These answered seemed good and logical, but were lacking in critical places. Why brothels? People fornicate in other places too, why brothels? Why didn't everyone die, why would they die in such weird pattern? What criteria did God use in choosing the rooms?

The fires became the talk of the year, everyone spoke about it, soon, it began gaining international attention. The strange fires of Lagos. This talk lasted long. Everyone became so engrossed that they failed to notice a very important detail of the burnings, no one saw the tinge of red and green in every soaring flame, no was able to connect the fires with the ball of fire of weeks ago.

Just when every brothel began thinking of shutting down, the first hotel- the biggest hotel in Lagos, burst into flames. And burned to the ground overnight.

Three people died in it. They were in the same room- a prominent political figure and two unknown ladies. That morning, international media began arriving in Nigeria. Things had finally gotten out of hands.

The following day, four more hotels burnt to the ground.

It became an epidemic.

Day after day, brothels and hostels combusted.

Soon, houses joined.

Next, offices, relaxation centers, churches, mosques, and sport centers joined, they just all of a sudden would catch fire and burn to the ground. A citywide fear arose and spread, no one, not even the religious leaders could now explain the fires, because the destructions were happening in strange places; why would God want to destroy a school, or a church- his church.

As Lagosians began escaping to other states and cites, brave researchers and journalists started trooping into Lagos. Many of them were careful enough to live in tents instead of houses. This didn't stop a tent from catching fire one cold night, killing its two occupants.

Lagos became a zone of death. The fire's anger grew by the day. If anyone got a chance to watch the landscape of Lagos from above, the sporadic combustions would look like a poignant firework.

One night, in a secluded luxurious house on the outskirts of Lagos, a man and a woman were talking,

"we live in strange times darling, how else can we explain these fires? I am so scared.."

"It is okay baby, you don't have to be scared, we're protected whatever it is, we don't get involved in shady sinful things, we have nothing to hide, the universe sees this and will protect us."

"Alright love, I believe you. I am even pleased in a way, our kids are out of the godforsaken country, I can't imagine them in a burning house, God forbid!"

"God forbid o," the man re-echoed, and continued,

"we are alone and scared, should we do something?" He winked at her and went closer.

She returned a knowing and mischievous smile.

Seconds later, her clothes dropped, his too.

Their bodies, locked at the hips soon ended up on a king-sized bed.

Five minutes later, they were laughing and gasping.

All of a sudden, the man faced the woman,

"I have an idea, let's try something..."

"what's that love?"

"remember the talk on spicing up sex-life?"

"Yes, I do, that crazy one?"

"Yes, yes, I think we should try the anal..."

"What!" She flew up.

"What!" he reacted, shocked at his own utterance.

She gave him the death stare for a few seconds, and then broke into a laugh,

"by all means baby! We should try it, I have always wanted to know how it feels."

Soon, she was on all four limbs.

At first, it was difficult- impossible, they were almost giving up. But after cries, judicious lubrication and persistence, in a moment of victory, he squeezed himself into her anus. It was excruciating at first, then it became less painful, then it became easy, then the pleasure set in. This when he came.

It wasn't very dramatic, one moment, they were two in the room, the next, a bald man in grey robes was behind them, his each hand tucked into the sleeve of the other hand, there was sparks of fire in his eyes. He had arrived in a gentle breeze, so they didn't notice until he roared,

"Stop!"

They sprang up, confused, afraid, shocked; two naked bodies in their most scared and intimate moment, they leaped up, ashamed, and dumbfounded.

"I say stop!" he boomed again.

The two lovers held themselves closely, shuddering, a million things running through their minds.

The man finally got the courage to speak,

"wh... wh.. who are you? Who are you? What do you want?"

"You know me, I am Elijah, a prophet of the Lord, I am here to cleanse this world of the dirt you and her just did."

They were lost, it felt like a dream, were they dreaming? Prophet Elijah?

"ple, plea, please, we don’t , I.. I.. don't understand, what.."

"There is only one way to be intimate with yourselves! You perverted creatures!" Elijah roared.

Those were the last words they heard before red and green flames engulfed their room and house, at once, they didn't get the chance to ask if he was sent by God, they didn't get to ask why there was that level of morbid interest in the kind of intercourse that should be practiced by men, or why Lagos was chosen.

If they had ask, he would have told them he wasn't sent, that he had actually escaped from heaven when he couldn't take more what was happening in earth, he would have told them Lagos just happened to be the first place he landed, Lagos was the beginning, his fire was going to reach every corner of the perverted planet.
