Garden of the Saint Pierre Palace, close to the Fine Arts Museum of Lyon - Paradise of Sculptures

avatar

Today, I'm going back in time to take you to a corner of the centre of Lyon, the ancient capital of Gaul, when it was still called Lugdunum. This is the hypercentre of the peninsula, between the Saône and the Rhône rivers.

In this district where I grew up, if I had to keep only one place, it would be this one : the Jardin du Palais Saint Pierre. Directly accessible from the Place de Terreaux where the Hôtel de Ville is located, which you can see below, there is the space, neither too large nor too small, of this former abbey cloister.

But let's finish with what can be seen in the square and among others, I choose to present you the Bartholdi Fountain. As its name indicates, it was created by the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the same one who created the Statue of Liberty, in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel, who was responsible for the internal structure.

This fountain holds a great place in my memory, I think it must be one of my first artistic emotions and awakening to Art. Its official name is "Rivers and Springs to the Ocean". Note that the fountain was originally in the centre of the Place de Terreaux.

IMG_8841.JPG

But let's get back to the main subject of this article... We enter through this string of vaults from the square. The general plan is a rectangle with a surface area of just over 2600m2...

IMG_8843.JPG

IMG_8845.JPG

The major works that give us the garden in its present form date from the 19th century. Great sculptors such as Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle and Eugène Guillaume were involved. I might as well tell you that my selection is exhaustive because it is almost a tradition to sit on the statues' pedestals and it is always a bit disturbing to ask people to leave so that we can take a picture ^^ !

The whole perimeter is vaulted, surmounted by friezes which are moldings of the frieze of the Panathenes and those of the Nereids monument.

IMG_8846 copy.jpg

IMG_8855.JPG

At each of the four corners of the courtyard, there are bronzes on rather high and richly carved pedestals...

IMG_8871.JPG

IMG_8873.JPG

IMG_8874.JPG

This one was Léon Cugnot's "Drunken Fauna"...

IMG_8847.JPG

IMG_8848.JPG

Above, Young Athlete by Jean-Baptiste Larrivé.

IMG_8853.JPG

IMG_8854.JPG

Finally, Giotto as a child drawing a ram's head by Jean-François Legendre-Héral. The fourth corner ? Well, there were two people sitting and talking and I didn't want to be a spoilsport...

IMG_8865.JPG

IMG_8866.JPG

Here it was, Carpeaux by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. I find this bronze very moving because it is the representation of a sculptor by another...

We continue with the friezes and some details of the archs and pediments. The two statues that frame the opening are antique copies, Aphrodite of the Capitol and Discobolus at Rest.

IMG_8869.JPG

Here it is, from left to right, Venus Genitrix and then, Ephebe, a copy of the sculptor Stephanos.

IMG_8852.JPG

Let us finish with Antinous of the Capitol and Artemis.

IMG_8859.JPG

IMG_8860.JPG

Last images of the archs, friezes and pediments. I haven't said much about, or paid much attention to, these last elements at the time, but they are busts of famous Lyonnais artists. I guess that makes it worth going back, and for you, you can check out this link.

IMG_8880.JPG

Did you pay attention to the detail at the bottom of the central arch... ?

I hope that this visit will have pleased you and will have made you want to go there if you pass in Lyon on occasion. I haven't really talked about the Musée des Beaux-Arts which can be reached from these gardens. That too will be the subject of a future visit, but you should know that this is a fascinating place... you won't waste your time!

Thank you for your visit and reading !

Oh my days, France!!! You certainly put on a Show. As I write Jamie's listening to the Australia v France match and I think you guys are winning.

What a beautiful place this is. They certainly gathered the greats there. I cannot wait to be in Europe. Here we are lucky to get a spray of graffiti on the side of a dunny wall.

Yeah, didn’t follow that, really not a football fan haha 😂

If it’s as you say so, I can image you’re impatient to be here ! This place is indeed pretty representative of what is possible to find in good conditions :)

So maybe, for my HiveGarden nickname, we could say « Calendula Esthète ? » or « Calendula Hoarder » ? In fact, I know you’ll find the perfect variation ^^
