This is the story of Auggie, a boy whose arrival in the world was not normal, since as he tells in the story, from birth - which was not common - he has needed 27 surgeries, to be able to breathe, eat, hear and some to look a little better. Auggie is a normal boy, with the likes of a 10 year old. He dreams of being an astronaut, plays video games, etc.

The story begins just a week after entering school, which represents a challenge for this child, since it will be the first time that he does it, since his own mother was in charge of educating him at home.
Already in school, Auggie who is accompanied by his mother; he meets a friendly director named Mr. Tushman whose name refers to funny words that the director himself jokes, which breaks the ice with Auggie.

Before starting school, three children accompany Auggie to take a tour of its facilities, among them we have Charlotte, who is a fairly outgoing girl who boasts of her achievements; Julian, a somewhat conceited boy and Jack with whom Auggie began to develop an almost instantaneous empathy due to the simplicity of him.

At times during the tour Julian makes somewhat offensive comments to Auggie, but at the end of the tour he responds and makes him see that he is not as ignorant as Julian thinks.
Back home, Auggie makes his parents aware of his decision that he would like to attend school, which is a relief to them.

On the first day of school, Auggie's parents and his sister accompany him, but Auggie wears an astronaut helmet, so they proceed to take it off and that is when the child experiences a very difficult test, which is to be alone in the world with nothing to hide.

She has a best friend, with whom she shares all her secrets and sorrows. But there comes a point that this friend, called Miranda, moves away from her, and Via begins to feel alone and ignored.

Fortunately, Via meets a boy named Justin, with whom she exchanges a few words and they both decide to join the drama club. The girl quickly gets excited and begins to unite her surname with Justin's, which; it is a typical attitude of adolescents.
Via dreams of being at some point the center of attention of her parents, as she relates that her mother left her career as a cartoonist despite having a unique talent because of Auggie; and that this is the source of her inspiration.

Finally, Via decides to attend drama classes and she can see Justin, but also Miranda within the same class.
The story goes back to Auggie, who lives day by day in the school, a torture when he has to go out to the patio, because it is the moment when everyone is looking at him.
Auggie decides right now to use his imagination and sees how Chewbacca from Star Wars accompanies him and opens the door for him. In science classes Auggie manages to stand out, and sees that this is difficult for Jack, so he decides to pass the exam answers to him. Since then they begin to develop a friendship, in which both begin to spend more time together and Auggie begins to feel more comfortable.

When the mother picks up the boy from school, she meets her new friend and is very pleased.
On the other hand, Justin and Via begin to talk and she comments to Justin that she misses her grandmother very much, since this was her support, but that she died and it was then that Via began to feel alone.
