Every day thousands of Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and even Cubans pass through Colombia and have somehow managed to pass through this dangerous jungle in search of a better future.

The jungle area of the Darién Gap, which separates Colombia from Panama, is not only used as an irregular passageway for migrants. This jungle became a propitious route for armed groups to send drugs to Central America destined for the United States.

This 575,000-hectare jungle, with no roads, represents a death trap for those seeking their way to the United States. The migrants who fall into the hands of the Clan del Golfo and the other armed groups that control the place are forced to continue their route with loads of drugs.

"I've been here a month, before I had been in Venezuela and we decided with my son to take this route, we need humanitarian aid to get through," says Alfredo, a Cuban migrant, who along with another group of his compatriots have not decided to continue due to the danger that right now represents crossing the Darien.

“We have dismantled an organization made up of Colombians and Ecuadorians that organized the smuggling of migrants to the United States. In the transports that were made by boat, the death of 10 children and nine adults was documented, these people paid between 5,000 dollars and 300 dollars to the Clan del Golfo and other armed groups, "said the director of the Colombian Police, General Jorge Luis Vargas .

The authorities say that in many cases the migrants who arrive at this point in the Darién are loaded with up to 25 kilos of coca in their backpacks, as a form of payment for their journey to reach the north.

“I have returned twice, I have not been able to climb the Darién. They are assaulting and raping. We are trapped because the only way out is the jungle, which is full of dangers,” says Alan Queen, a Cuban migrant, who is in Capurganá waiting for solutions for his route, which at this point began to become dangerous.

“Everything happens in that jungle, we can't go there. They are raping women, they are destroying the whole world, that is why we ask for help to be able to get out of here, because we are quite a few Cubans, mostly families with children and pregnant women,” says Omar Acosta, another of the Cubans. that he has not been able to continue on his way because he speaks of the dangers to which other walkers have been exposed on this route.

A journey and a deadly trap for thousands of migrants, who continue to be recruited by criminal structures, despite the fact that the authorities have deprived them of the ability to move around this place and take out their drugs, these groups continue to sow fear and using emigrants as mules.
