Origins of OG

Marijuana has a history that is more myth than fact due mostly to the clandestine nature of cannabis production. This combined with limited understanding of the Genetics has given us an oddity in modern agriculture with no case's that parallel its mysterious past. Given that marijuana has so many mysterious aspects that can sometimes defy explanation, I'm going to try to start exploring this vast realm of eye witness testimony and subjective evidence. For my first choice of crazy cannabis secrets is the origin of OG.

From what I have been told and or know from experience before researching for this article is, OG usually presents in a plant by having dense golf ball shaped bud formations scattered throughout the plant as apposed to larger cola formations. This being said Top or Cola nugs still grow they are just less elongated but it will be usually more dense when grown adequately.

This above is my subjective experience now using the magic of the internet I am going to attempt to cross reference different sites and determine the points that seem to be pervasive.

OG Kush is known to be fairly difficult to grow; and will produce low yields if not grown correctly. This also makes it a risky investment for growers; and tends to drive down the supply. This being said it still makes a great plant type for growing in a limited space.

While many websites and dispensaries list OG Kush as an indica, many people argue that the strain is in fact a sativa, or some sort of sativa-dominant hybrid. We can’t exactly argue with them considering the genetics are, for the most part unknown, and stem from purely myth. The thing to remember is that most of the different types of OGs are phenotypes of the original OG Kush plant from the 90’s.

A phenotype is simply a difference in the outward, physical appearance of the plant. This includes the atoms, molecules, cell structures, metabolism, and basically everything else that is a function or behavior of a plant (different smells, tastes, and effects). There is in essence, an endless amount of marijuana phenotypes beyond sativa and indica. When you examine different types of pure indicas, there are obvious differences in traits across the strains.

(A phenotype is simply a difference in the outward, physical appearance of the plant.)

What this means is that two different seeds from the same mother plant (same genotype) can have significant variation in the resulting plants (phenotype). This is thought to occur in some hybrid plants because the sativa gene is recessive. A plant with a 60/40 cross in favor of sativa can produce seeds with a dominance of indica traits, essentially resulting in two completely different strains. Although people modestly classify them as “hybrids,” I believe these phenotypes are far more complex than that, and deserve more accurate categorization in the future.

Seedfinder lists OG Kush as indica, with a family tree stemming from Chemdawg (Chemdawg x [Lemon Thai x Old World Paki Kush]). This point is highly contested though.

Now interestingly enough this California 90s time line seems to be a reoccurring theme. This is why when I found this continuation that fit this pre conceived narrative it seemed likely. Humboldtseeds.net ironically enough tracked the origin to Florida.

Origins continued

OG Kush originated during the prohibition era. In the 1990s, a grower living in Florida, named Matt "Bubba" Berger, created a strain using a Northern Lights cut that he would later call "Bubba", as his granny used to call him. Berger was already famous for the development of another cannabis legend, Kryptonite, a powerful strain nicknamed "Krippy" or "Supernaut". According to legend, "Krippy" turned into "Kush" after one of Berger's friends started to call it "Kush Berries" because of its dense, colorful and round nuggets. The name was a sheer coincidence for he had no knowledge of how strongly influenced this variety was by the strains that came from the Hindu Kush Mountains.
bill_nye_mind_blown.gif

For years, this "Kush" was one of the most precious secrets shared by the cannabis community in Florida. However, it wasn't until its arrival in LA, in the hands of the man who was to become the creator of a modern cutting of OG Kush, Josh D, that it really took off. Despite OG Kush not being the easiest plant to grow (super sensitive to light, nutrients, and plagues, and prone to producing seeds and male flowers when under stress), Josh D figured out how to make the most out of her.

Those friends and growers he shared cuttings and knowledge with almost effortlessly managed to spread OG Kush around the world using a wealth of hybrids such as Sapphire OG, Raskal's OG, Tahoe OG Kush, Larry OG or San Fernando Valley OG Kush. There are many other famous hybrids, though, mostly variants: Bubba Kush Pre'98, Purple Kush and Raspberry Kush, for example. Today many Californian hybrids come from this strain.

Cherry Pie is a muddled mess genetically speaking but it also presents with a OG growth pattern. I am inclined to believe this origin of OG it may be subjective with conclusive evidence being years of genetic testing off. This oral history is the most evidence that we have to go or grow on.

The local hillbillies that taught me to grow had a similar situation with a lineage with Northern Lights and early pearl strains being cross breed to create a new Strain they called angel. I was even able to grow this strain as my first plant, couple of police raids later and generations of effort perfecting this strain where lost in time. (As well as the police evidence locker) so I'm inclined to believe a northern light origin. This strain grown originally in Florida made its way to California and the rest is subjective stoner history.

Anyone else have a better idea, again it's the most fun part figuring out how these strains came to be. If you have any information I would like to hear about it in the comments, scientific advancement requires a open mind that can admit when they made a mistake 😉. The other question I was going to ask is have you ever had a strain go extinct on you. I think that this has happened at least 3 times to me personally 😅.

I think I will start trying out a myth busters style article once a week on mythical and mysterious aspects of cannabis.

Feel's like Indica because I'm in da couch, From what I can gather its a high THC strain around 20-23% from what I can find on it. My particular specimen seems more sweat and spicy compared to skunky which is what I usually gravitate towards. Imported Jamaican Arabica Coffee with a mixed kratom tea labeled Train wreck.

Great read!

So being from an area where the real Og kush traveled to from Southern California, I am familiar with this. Also familiar with the actual bud, and let me tell you, even till this day it is the best I ever have come across!

Everything you mentioned is legit, I never knew about the guy calling it kush. Which makes sense because Og kush isn’t a kush.

So for the og part, that stands for ocean grown. Legend has it that a guy was smoking on it and he said, this must be mountain grown, then the guy who grew it, being from So cal said nope! This is ocean grown!

But yeah your right about the history. So much of it is like folk lore. Just how Chen dog came about, which the legend says it came from bag seed from a Grateful dead concert.

We might never know, but I do know I wish I had the original cut from most of these strains.

Yeah like I said towards the end I had the honor of both growing and smoking a local legend before it was lost to time so this subject has always been a fascination. Thanks for the feedback I want to use Weedcash anti censorship to sorta develop a accumulative history of growers/smokers It will just take time.
